none that I know of for deer hunting the lighter the better in my book you carry one a lot more than you shoot one look over on snipershide for sale forum there is a light weight 308 worth the money I dont know the guy but sounds like a preety good deal

I am a .270 fan and would look at a savage or Tikka.
Those Tikka's are really light and feel good to me.
I like the CZ's too.

Crap, too many good choices!!

James: Here's a suggestion: http://ruger.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=7976&return=Y My brother has lived in Alaska for over 40 years, has trapped, hunted, ran the Iditarod, teaches firearms safety and bow hunting safety courses, taken Moose with a 44 Magnum handgun, taken bear with a bow, etcetera, etcetera. He has three .30-'06 Springfield's, along with 37 other firearms and really likes his new Ruger, M77, Mark II, All-Weather Ultra Light in stainless steel and synthetic stock. He says he can carry it all day long, only 6 1/2 lbs) and doesn't have to worry about rust. Ruger's retail is $779 but he purchased his at Wal-Mart in Anchorage for $499. The .30-'06 is a .308 caliber and is the most popular cartridge in use. Also, you have a wide range of bullets you can use. Just another suggestion. Hope this helps.

Tracker:

If you buy a Savage, you have the option of getting a barrel nut wrench, Go and No Go gauges that will work for .243, .260, 7mm-08, .308, and .338Federal. and you can buy prefit barrels in any of those calibers in any weight barrel you want. If you want to buy different bolt heads and gauges your caliber and case choices grow considerably more.

In response to your question about a 308 as a possible cartridge, when shooting around 300/350 yd.

I own and have hunted with several cartridges over the years.
I have to say the 308 is my favorite.
I have not had an opportunity to hunt real big-game with it, such as moose and big bear. But from what I've been told the 308 with 165 to 180 grain bullet works well.

However, I have killed a lot a whitetails,4 mule deer, and two antelope. And I have killed them from distances ranging 50 yd. to the one antelope was shot a 660 yd.

I've killed quite a few deer from 350 to 450 yd. when I hunt at my farm. The deer come out in the evenings on the west side of the farm and it is 350 yd to that fence row. In the mornings they come out from the North side fence row and that is 450 yd.,measure distance with a range finder)

The load that I use is Nosler 150 grain ballistic tip with 42.5gr of benchmark.

The rifle is a Remington action, Heavy Hart barrel 1/12 twist
22 in. long, this particular rifle started life as hunter
class rifle in the IBS. With the load I mentioned above it consistently shoot's 1/4 to 3/8in groups that 100 yd.
Scope is a sightron 6x24 with mill Dots.

But the key to being able to make shots at those distances and make good clean kills, you must shoot a lot,and know your rifle inside out.
Also have a good range finder.

Where I live,I have access to a range, where I can shoot 2,3,4 and 500 meters, and I spend a lot of time shooting.

I hope this is of some help
