Hunting moose with .280 ?

Jack O'Conner & Col.Townsen Whelen ..those guys are real..You will find them.& plenty of hunting stories.....Someone else wrote "It is not the arrow, but the Indian" Most Any of the Cartridges praised here will do the job..with Today's bullets or arrows ..We live in the best of times ..Major advancements in bullet construction..This gets us back to the "Indian"..Your job is to know the game & the terrain..Mike in Ct

Your 280 will work just fine. It's all about quality of bullet construction and if you can deliver the bullet exactly on call. Plenty of moose have been killed up in the northern provinces as well as Norway/Sweden/Denmark with the 6.5 Swede, a cartridge with less potential. I'd not feel under-gunned with a 280 Rem and would expect a clean harvest.

Pretty tough to argue that point as the 30--06 has probably killed more moose than any other firearm.

I'll second that 30-06 post...& it was the best tasting moose I ever ate..Only a 400 lber..Grin...Bring two skinning knifes, & a good stone to get the hide off..One other thing about moose "hide" The friggin things are non-reflective..Almost impossible to see them critters at night or in the thick woods..mike
 
I'm wanting to research this as well. I learned to hunt with a bow and my step dad was anti-rifle so I drew a lot of misconceptions that I'm erasing nowadays. I'm wanting to write up a hunting manual for myself and offspring and friends with information regarding terminal performance of various bullets at various distances and velocities. I've seen some suggestions of bullets for the OPs hypothetical 280 for moose... any other bullet suggestions for best performance on his potential gun? With Berger I think the 140 would deliver good velocity and create a good wound channel even though the 168 might carry more fpe and long range ballistics? Would the partitions offer better performance for his application?

Yes. The 175 Nosler Partition has earned a reputation for holding together on tough hide and bone such as in a moose. They stay together and make it to where it counts. Not to take away Berger or the like, just believe in a 280, the partition design is best.

Really like those North Fork Bonded bullets in that article. I WILL be looking closely at those for future use.
 
Ive shot a few moose in newfoundland. One with a 280ack/ 175? Partitions. 2 with a 30-06ack 180gr partitions, one with a 338-06 with like 220? Partitions. Every one was 200+yds in a bog, and every one was shot 4 times as they spun around in place so as to not let them get farther into the bog than necessary. When i go back it will be with a 375 h&h or i wont go. Moose are not the easiest animals to get out of a bog and besides a 375 h&h kicks less than all the calibers i listed- or at least the felt recoil is way less. If youve never shot one you wouldnt know what i mean- if you have you know it seems scary but its a pleasure actually
 
Some of the factory 300 Gr 375 H&H can really get your attention..The 250 grain load not so much....Don't ask about the custom 350 gr load..YIKES...Mike in Ct.................I've had a lot of fun with the 338 win mag & the 375 H&H ..Now I'm playing with cast bullets for the old OUCH & OUCH

I love the 235/250gr varieties but stick with light game with the 235 or any other bullet on the light side of any caliber

Saw it again a couple weeks ago, some young guys sharing a game farm with us. The one morning we "swaped" locations with them and the one hunter with the biggest gun and most camos on was giving it all the "there is only one caliber" and its a 300WM and what what...later the afternoon we heard this 300WM sniper completely missed a Kudu bul at 65y, completely missed a Zebra at 80 something yards and shot the smallest Blue Wildebeest on the farm in the mouth.
