Hunting Glass. Greybull Precision Optic?

I need knowledge from the masses. I need a better piece of glass on top of my .280 AI. I'm considering the Greybull precision hunting optic. I have the money for it but not much more at this point. Money my wife doesn't know about anyway. I don't think much of the Huskemaw setup.

Snowfighter,
The Greybull scope is a Leupold 4.5x14 with John's reticle if I am not mistaken. I own a couple 4.5x14 scopes and they work great, but I have very little confidence in the accuracy/repeatability of the scopes adjustments for a dial and shoot application. Too much backlash. They are excellent, rugged "set and forget it" scopes that rarely need an adjustment once zeroed.

What don't you like about the Huskemaw? I sell them and the G7, and for the money, I think the Huskemaw is a great value. I have several customers who even use them for F-class to 600 yards. The turret system is very accurate and repeatable without backlash. I also honestly believe the simpler the reticle, the better for hunting. I have seen too many hunters miss because their eyes locked on the wrong reticle line.

greybull optics

1+ for the Huskemaw.. I have a friend who has both..he likes the Huskemaw best..after I pay off my latest NF.. I,m buying a Huskemaw for my hunting rifle..~Danny

Well I can be talked into the huskemaw with good arguments. If I was already sold I would have made a purchase already.
I've been told the huskemaw has glass comparable to a $200 optic. I could have gotten bad info. That's what a very reputable gunsmith told me though.
Would someone mind answering a dumb question for me? Define "backlash" for me so I can make a more educated decision.

the new Huskemaw series (Blue diamond ) has alot clearer glass than there old model..on using the side focus on the leupold to set the perlex if you over focus it,you need to bring it back to infinity again and start over because of the slop (back lash) others can explain it better (also what I call the Leupold rap, having to overdial your yardage and then dialing back down).. :my friend with his greybull has to do that,as he had to do with his other leupolds.. he was told the problem was fixed...he also liked the G7 (NF) but did not like the WT or the cost at 2000. best value to me is the Huskemaw for hunting ~Danny

I would love to know the name of the gunsmith who told you the Huskemaws have $200 glass. They are not a Nightforce, but in side by side comparisons, it is hard to tell the difference.

I just got back from Alaska on a grizzly hunt. I had a 5-20X Huskemaw and my outfitter friend had the G7. The G7 was brighter in no/low light conditions but we both were able to use the scopes when the Leupold and Swarovski guys were back at camp. The outfitter has sold all of his Huskemaws now and replaced them with G7 models. I think it is because hunters like me pay him way too much for hunts and he has nothing else to do with his money except buy toys and parts for his Dodge diesel truck.

Right now the Huskemaws are on backorder until August, but G7 scopes are available. It truly depend on how much you want to spend. Aaron Davidson from Gunwerks/G7 designed the Huskemaw scope and turret assy with input form Nightforce engineers. It isn't a piece of crap by any means. It works well.

Just buy a Nightforce. You will save money over the G7 and get the same thing.

Get out and shoot your rifle, collect data, and go to http://kentonindustries.com/ and have a custom turret made for it and you are done.
They can also do turrets for Leupold scopes if you go that route.
There is also a guy on this forum selling stickers that you simply stick to your turret and you are good to go.

P.S. I use Leupold scopes for hunting, and I'm usually at camp when the other guys are still out. But it's because my animal is being skinned while they are out tracking theirs! ;D

I have been dialing a Leupold for years with no issues and they will smoke a Huskemaw any day. Leupold warranty is second to none. Who knows if Huskemaw will even be around next year? And yes, I have owned both scopes. You will not go wrong with the Greybull scope. John burns seems to do just fine. ;D Just my .002.

Paul.

Didn't seem crazy about the 1/3 click adjust. Maybe old fashion but seems like the .25 is the best of the 1/8 or 1/3. Stricktly opinion as I haven't used one. I have a couple 1/8 but no 1/3.

Huskemaw does the 1/3MOA to get 20 MOA out of one revolution. I have yet to meet a shooter who can hold .08MOA at distance in a hunting situation.
