Hunting Bullet poll

The only deer ive taken was with a 6.5 prc using a 140 berger vld-h. It was a very close shot at 75 yards. Penciled right through the lungs. Might have been too close for expansion. Exit hole was about the size of a quarter.

Suppose I may still strive to get closer, Get between bedding & food source with ambush in mind. If Accubond LR shoots 3/4 MOA or better in your rifle I would give those a go.

Under normal hunting circumstances, 400 yards would be max for me. If I had extensive experience at that distance with a particular load, it would be the same. I have killed animals at that distance but, today I realize that was largely luck. I owe the game I hunt more respect than trying to go further.... YMMV

I’ve had much better terminal performance on deer in my 300WM with the Hornady ELD-X than the Berger VLD. Shoulder shots…DRT with either. Behind the shoulder, pass thru and great blood trail with ELD-X. Not always the case with Berger’s for me.

Depends on the cartridge. In 25-06, using Berger 115 GR or Sierra 117 gr Game King. 6.5-300 Weatherby, using factory Swift 130 gr Scirocco or Barnes 127 gr LRX. Got a 300 Win Mag with 190 gr LR AB, really for elk but would think would be a smoker on deer. Setting up a 7mm PRC that is going to use 175 gr eld-x primarily for elk but should be kick a... for deer. Get a comfortable setup and have fun with some longer range live target practice.

In 6.5 the Sierra tipped game king (TGK) sure drives deep and expands for me. DRT way passed 400 yards.

In 270 I still like the regular Hornady 140 gr. Interlock. Not the best BC but sure works. My longest kills - to 710 yards - were with 7mm mag using 154 Hornady SST's. gr.

As far as bullets for white tail beyond 400Y, I have a Dasher build coming up that I’m pretty sure will kill most any deer out to 800 Y with left over 103 VLD.

22 cal = 77 grain TMK
.243 = 95 grain SST for 1:10 twist barrels, 108 ELDM for 1:8 twist barrels
6.5mm small cartridge = 105 grain Cavity Back MKZ
6.5mm medium-large cartridge = 143 grain ELDM
7mm small cartridge = 120 grain Nosler BT
7mm medium-large cartridge = 162 grain ELDX
30 cal = 178 grain ELDX
338 cal = 225 grain Accubond

Are you the first guy to try a 30 br for hunting ?
I didn’t know you could get to 3000 either.
Probably not. But I like it alot. Yea 3000 fps according to the Garmin is really cool. The 125 gr. Nosler A B is bad news for a deer.

Been using Nosler Ballistic Tips for 20+ years for Whitetail. 7mm and 30 cal. Killed quite a few out past 400 yards with 7wsm using 140gr and they never go more than a few yards
