Hunters using 6mm cartridges, here's an excellent...

...AFFORDABLE hi-end hunting bullet, the Hornady 80g. all-copper**, tipped GMX.

...now at about half-price or less.

I bought a bunch and shot my first today from my 6X45-caliber AR15. Of course the AR15 format with its original-length case won't let you seat these long bullets out where they belong, but they still work just finely.*

Being all-copper**, they're long at 1.104" for their weight compared with the Speer soft-point boattail at 0.986".

Get 'em while they last; I bought my share.

And FWIW, I've yet to determine why they're 'factory seconds'.

Hmm...this would be an excellent bullet for the new 6mm ARC.

* Nov. 02: the seating marks (from a Forster Ultra Micrometer Seater Die) are fairly prominent because this load, with H4895, is compressed.

** Actually they're all-copper-alloy called gilding metal, that includes (I believe) tin.

The blem bullets are advertised as flat base. I don't have much experience in lead free bullets but aren't the 6mm 80 grain GMX bullets made with a boat tail profile?

Apparently some are, some aren't.

Nov. 02: And here's a pic of the full-price Hornady 80g. GMX; looks to me to be the same as the factory-second.

None of those illustrations appear to be a flat base bullet to my eyes, such as a Speer Hot-Cor.

ETA: This looks more like a photo than an artist rendering to my eyes.

75 gr Sierra hp directly above front leg. No more heart, no more lungs, just a dead deer. Very simple. Many are not aware of a deers anatomy. The bug shoulder bones are NOT directly above the front leg. They are forward of that spot. Hit them couple of inches above the front leg its over quickly, all energy expanded in the heart/lungs.

See post #3, Nov. 02 info.

I've had similar experiences with the 85 grain Sierra BTHP in the 243 Win. except I try to place my shots slightly behind the shoulder (broadside) and about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom of the deer.

At first I was skeptical about using this bullet on deer because it's primarily a varmint bullet but my gun smith convinced me to try it. Still reluctant to use for buck hunting, I tried it on a doe, fairly large one, and the doe went down immediately. Doe was about 130 yards away.

That was several years ago. I've taken a few bucks with it since and I'm now a believer. If they do run, it isn't far if I place the bullet properly. All shots were under 200 yards.

I should add however that the two largest bucks I've ever taken were with a 308 Win, 150 Sierra Pro Hunter bullet at 185 and 155 yards. The first one as an old 9 point, 175.5 lbs field dressed, the other an 8 point, 150 lbs field dressed if my memory is correct. Even so I have faith that the 85 BTHP in 243 Win could have gotten the job done.
