Went sneaking in this morning early to try and get the drop on a coyote. We had lost a lot of the snow a while back, so the snow machines haven't been out stirring things up in this area. I hiked in a half mile, hung up a decoy on the trail sign, and was set up at first light.
I howled 7 or 8 times, then stayed quiet. With in 5 minutes a dog came from the far treeline to the left, heading right. I followed him in the scope and he led me to two more! I grabbed the squeaker and called softly and all three started in. The wind was quartering away to the right, so I figgered I was fine. Dog #1 had a good lead and disappeared in the closest ravine. As I waited for him to come in view, the next sighting was him hightailing it out of Dodge right past #2 in line. #2 promptly sat on his butt wondering what's up when I sent a 95 VLD dead center. Pretty cool to hear the "khawhump" when it hits. #3 was too close the the ridge on the right and was gone in a heartbeat. #1 came into view hauling ass to the left at 400+. Tried sending the wounded dog blues, but zero luck on that. Decided not to send off any more rounds, so I can hit this area again. It was all over in ten minutes.
Coyote's view of my stand.
196 yards, dead dog. The little black line in the middle of the pic. I had zoomed closer, but was so dark, I didn't think it would show, so I backed it off part ways.
