Ok ...Fess up

As I get older, I find myself not as wide awake when I need to be. Was deer hunting a hay field, most shots within 100 yards and set up in a depression in a bordering hedgerow. Nice comfortable spot, had my predator chair, my hot seat and my muzzleloader on a bipod. At the end of the field is a small patch of woods where the deer come out around half hour before to half hour after sundown. Got in and set up around 3:30, an hour and a half before sundown. Sitting there for about fifteen minutes, figure I'll rest my eyelids for a second or two. Open my eyes, and there are six nice does out feeding. Move slowly, put the crosshairs on the biggest one and pull the trigger. She jumps and kicks and takes off in the opposite direction as the others. I look at my watch, 5:00. God only knows how long they were out there with me sound asleep. Got up and walked to a bordering patch of woods and there she lay, nice double lunger.
Sometimes napping is how I trick ‘em into coming out. Helps me be still too. Snoring can be a deal breaker though.

When I was 16, a buddy & I had 12 gauge shotguns, mine an autoloader Winchester. Mid North Carolina.
We were dove hunting - at dusk, and they were flying all over. If you have ever hunted doves, they
juke around and it's not easy to hit em.

Anyway, our barrels were really hot and we had about a 5%
kill ratio, boy it was fun tho.

so one dove zips by and I shoot 3, he shoots 3 (same dove) & a hit on the
last shot. We reload, I pick up the dove, put in my back vest carrier. 10 secs later, the dove
flies out of my vest, and we shoot 6 more at the same dove. and missed. fun times, tho!

Oh hell, I just remembered this one.

When I was about 16 and my little brother about 12 we went squirrel hunting first day of the season on the Ga coast. Hunting under the canopy of the live oaks and hickory trees. We were both carrying 1100s, mine a 12 his a 20, walking around about 90 acres. We hadn't seen a thing for the first 20 minutes or so of walking, until all at once it seemed like the whole canopy above us moved. Tree rats everywhere. We both lit it up like a fire fight. I know I tossed 2 in after the gun ran empty.

When the noise died down we both looked at each other.... not a single hit. Over the course of a few yrs we really thinned the squirrel, 'coon, and 'possum population down on that property, but not that day. We still laugh about that one 40+ yrs later.

I used to shoot mistletoe out of the trees near swamps in N.C. at Christmastime. Nice slow moving target for a scattergun.

Oh heavens, a load of #1 into a big wad of mistletoe in the top of a tree got enough to deco our house and all the neighbors. You had to pick a wad near the edge so it didn't get tangled up when it fell. It was also useful to cut the top out of pine trees to use a Christmas trees.

Now the real challenge was using the 22 to cut the stems on the pretty magnolia blooms at the top of the tree for mom.
