Howdy -- And Coax/Seb Rest Question

Have lurked around here for a while but just finally joined, so want to start with a Hello!

This is a question that has come up before, but with some recent changes and the NEO being out in folks hands for a while now, I wanted to ask.

I am getting into F-open and want a new/used front rest. With the cost and longevity of the things, leaning towards trying to find a used one and want to know if I am giving up anything going with a Farleys over the Seb, and are the new Coax II or NEO's worth the jump in price or wait.

It be shot from the bench for fun and practice a fair amount, but true use will be F-class.

Thanks,

Will

I have a Seb NEO (one of the early gen. 1's) and it's been an excellent rest. That being said, I don't think you are really giving up anything to go with a Farley. They are both great products that have been used by winning shooters in F-Class.

If a joystick rest is the way you want to go, I don't think you can go wrong with either of them. If you are not sure you will like a joystick top, you might check out the Caldwell or Shadetree joystick tops/rests. They are more readily had and will give you a chance to try it out without investing a ton of money or time in terms of waiting.

There are a lot of really nice non-joystick rests to consider as well, if you are not set on a coaxial.

Disclosure: I don't shoot Fclass.

I don't like the single offset post for the Farley...for that single reason I have a NEO. I have only shot off mine twice but so far I'm really impressed with it and like it better than the original SEB (prior to NEO) that I had and sold.

Jay's Caldwell/Shadetree suggestion is a great one if you are just starting out and not realizing if you will like it or not. I shoot against a father/son duo that are always contenders and they use a Caldwell and shooting against guys with 10x the rest.

Good luck.

I shoot benchrest predominantly, with some very occasional F Class, so take my answer in that context.

I shot a Farley rest from 2004 to 2012, then changed to a Seb NEO when they first came out. In my opinion, the NEO is a better rest. I recently went back and tried my Farley, and its ok. But the NEO is a lot smoother.

Incidentally, my NEO is set up Ratigan style, with the up-lift leaf springs removed from the rest, and a counter weight on the front of the joystick.

If you buy a Neo you will not regret it. I waited about 13 months for mine and it was worth the wait. My scores went up on average by 3 points just because I didn't have to fight the wheel on my old rest and I don't have to squeeze my bag. You can dial in the exact spot you want to put the bullet there very quickly. Even if you decide you don't like it you will be able to get your money back. I was approached by two people at the SW Nationals offering to buy mine for more than I paid for it! I don't get offers on my other gear like that. The Farley II is also a fine rest and is much more available. IMHO if you buy a Farley II you will always have Neo envy.

I had an original SEB Coaxial when they first came out and changed to a NEO when they became available. I agree with Gonzos, "If you buy a Neo you will not regret it." I have used four different joy stick rests and the NEO is the best hands down. I love all the vertical adjustment when I have to shoot on uneven firing points. It is stable and very lockable. I also love my SEB Bigfoot rear bag. I am sure it improved my scores a good bit.

Thanks for the input folks.

What about the Seb Coax, pre NEO?? If I can find one used, still preferred to Farley?

Hoping to keep eyes peeled and pick up either a Farley or Seb used. Sounds like the NEO wait is going to prove prohibitive for the time being. Maybe get one of the older versions of either to use while wait for a NEO and them pass it along afterward. Figure a used rest won't depreciate much more, right.

Any of you fine fellers--or gals--have one collecting dust?

I put my order for a SEB rest in Sept. 2012 and just recently took delivery. I didn't think I could wait that long for anything. Now that I have it, it seems like I just went online to order it and it came a week later.

I'm thinking about getting back in line to order a second one.

Wildwilalaska,
I learn from experience that- not all people like co-ax/joystick rest, especially if they are not used to it oe never used a joystick rest before. It's hard to change a particular shooting style or old habit for some people. I know from experience that I cannot satisfy all/most people, probably just 98-99% of them.
Only be sure you first really know what you want.
One of the good things about my rests is, if you don't like it you can sell it very easily & probably get more than what you paid. *(this is a fact, not myth or so)

BaconFat,
Thanks for choosing my rest for your shooting needs!

Also thank you guys for the kind words!

seb.

I tried the Shadetree route, and finally bought a SEB, what a difference! I don't have a NEO, but I have an original version with a NEO bag on it, and it is much more stable. See if you can buy an original SEB while you wait for the NEO, it's the best way to go.

I have the original SEB with the swivel head. It was that feature that drew me to the SEB original.. It is a spectacular rest and has helped me immensely in F-Open..

I like the look of the original better than the NEO, but haven't been behind either. Limited opportunities for hands on here in Alaska. Several farleys and Sinclairs are most of what I have seen.

I have used all 3, in order of smoothness, I'd put them original Seb, Farley 2, Neo. I own a Farley, and although the Neo is smoother, I have smoother up my Farley by switching greases and using shadetree tension screws. I have no desire to upgrade. It does everything I need, and is very smooth.
