Howa vs CVA, RAR

Opinions wanted: Lookin' for a small, short barreled "truck gun" in 300 Black-Out to run suppressed. I already own a CVA Cascade SB and a RAR. I think the CVA is a better rifle vs the RAR. Barrel quality is far superior in my opinion and the stock is more rigid, albeit slightly heavier though. How would the Howa mini compare to either of these? Any pet peeves or things that "need" to be changed?

I have the howa mini in 300bo. SHoots great, however the detachable mag does not work with heavy subsonics. IDK about with light weight bullets. Ive heard some people have replaced the spring with a 30 carbine mag spring and that works.

Are these standard AR-15 style magazines, like the RAR or are they a proprietary Howa Mini mag?

If you want the best possible action in terms of materials and production methods and do not care about the total package out of the box the Howa is the way to go.

If you want it to work out of the box and do not car about materials, manufacture methods, bottom metal, stock Howa might not be the best way to go.

There is not a single company on this earth that gives you a better platform than Howa for the money since they use a forged steel lower and bolt that is then machined on an CNC Mill.

That said the stocks and plastic bottom metal used on a lot of the products imported by Legacy leave a lot to be desired. If just looking at the action and bolt alone the Howa is on par if not better than a Winchester Pre-64 Model 70 or most custom actions today. As it comes out of the box though it leaves a lot to be desired depending on which model we are talking about and how you intend to use it.

If you want a fantastic car that needs nothing and will last a lifetime a Lexus or Toyota is a safe bet. If you want to build power ont he cheap and want easy upgrade path it is hard to go wrong with a Chevy with an LS or LT engine in it so long as you do not expect much out of the box!

Depending on your priorities either path can be a great way to go. I hope that made sense!

P.S. I think Howa are gems but that assumes you either reload so you can account for their longer than SAAMI chambers or if you intend to build a world class rifle off their bones.

I also think they make great rifles for the average hunter.

What they are not! They are not a Tikka T3! You pay a lot more for a TIkka T3 but out of the box a Tikka T3 needs nothing!

I would rather have a Howa though than most other rifles at their price point of $100 to $200 more than a Howa!

The problem with Howa's is normally the stock and deep chamber. That said I have never purchased a a Howa that did not shoot 1 MOA or better with match grade ammo if you tried enough weights and brands. I have never owned a Howa that would not shoot sub MOA with my hand loads.

I hate the Hogue over molded stocks and those models that come with plastic bottom metal.

The Howa HACT trigger has to be one of the very best factory 2 stage triggers ever offered on the market in America. If there is a problem it is that most American are ignorant as to what makes for a great trigger and they are especially ignorant when it comes to 2 stage triggers. I would trade my left nut if Howa would make their 2 stage HACT triggers for Mausers, AR's, Remington 700's, Ruger M77 Mkii and Savage LA and SA bolt guns! It is a fantastic trigger and anyone that does not think so is truly rather ignorant and inexperienced as it relates to firearms the last 200 years and especialy the last 100 years with what has been offered to the American public at large. If Legacy Arms was out of the picture I can assure you I could get Howa to modify their HACT trigger to be almost as good as Trigger Tech.

Thanks for all the replies but this decision may have just gotten even easier on me. Local shops don't have anything in stock for the Mini in 300-BO, so I jumped on the Howa website and it looks like they discontinued the 300 BlackOut chambering in the Mini for 2023. Guess this endeavor will go on the back burner for a while.

If u want a short truck gun get a Thompson Contender chopped and threaded to 16". I have one in 223 and that thing goes everywhere with me.

I'm bolt guy. I could easily get a CVA short barreled Scout, I just don't like break action firearms. I like the Ruger American Compact (youth) models and the CVA Cascade SB (short barrel) Which you can remove the 1" spacer from the stock to mimic a youth length of pull, then you already have a threaded 16" barrel, so no additional fees ; )

I wouldn’t rule out the Savage Axis.
Another dark horse that a couple people I know have been happy with for the price is the Mossberg MVP. I think they paid $399.

Then there’s this, certainly worth a look

Outstanding deal no doubt! That should make someone a nice little package.

Hardly a truck gun...but very nice. I recently bought a mint used one but have not had an opportunity to even shoot it yet.
