Howa Mini

I realize this kind of like the tail waging the dog. But... I'd like to buy a Howa mini barreled action to put into a pristine Weatherby Varmitmaster stock that I have had for several years. Actions screws are about the same distance apart. On paper anyway. Wonder if any of the members here have tried the conversion and how much removal and filling was required.

I used a Howa Mini barreled action for a build couple years ago. I used a Boyd’s laminated stock and it was 99% drop in. Less than $200. I do this stuff for a living. I wouldn’t waste my time, personally, to try and refit from one inlet to another for that cost. Whichever way you choose to go-the Mini is hard to beat. I turned a .223 into a 6X45 without ever testing original barrel. Installed a Jard trigger. One of my favorites. You’ll like the Howa Mini if you decide to get one.

I put a 6mm Grendel barrel on, Boyd’s stock and Oregon Gunsmithing flush bottom metal.
If action doesn’t match the wood I could end up a nightmare

This is exactly what I want to do for a youth rifle. Do you like the Oregon Gunsmithing bottom metal?

Even if bolt spacing is correct the bolt handle, lug and action diameter will likely not be. Not that it cant be done, just how much work you are willing to put in. You can mill the lug, re-cut the bolt holes and cut the bolt cut to fit. Bed it all in marine-tex and get it to work.

Great little actions. I have 3 now and really like them.

I used Oregon Gunsmithing hinged floorplate bottom metal on my build. Very well made and an attractive addition to the Mini. I didn’t use mine very long. I had issues with my big fingers getting 6X45 rounds into magazine under scope. Function was flawless nonetheless. I swapped over to the the bottom metal that uses CZ magazines. Not as nice looking but I don’t have the issues loading.

I'm sure as they say "the juice aint worth the squeeze" Even a close fit can be allot of work. Without having the two side by side It's hard to know just how much. I've been enamored by Roy Weatherby's Mk 5 stocks since I was a kid or I wouldn't even consider it.
