HOWA 1500 ACTION

I'M THINKING OF BUILDING A 6BR ON A HOWA 1500 ACTION. I HAVEN'T SEEN ANYTHING ON THIS ACTION.IS THIS A BAD IDEA?

Allan, if a re-stocked Savage can shoot High 2s to low 3s with a PacNor pre-fit barrel, I see no reason why a Howa, with a precision chamber and top-quality barrel, could not achieve similar results. I think Mike Bryant, www.bryantcustom.com, has a little experience with Howa actions. A smith can determine whether "blue-printing" the action is called for. For impressive accuracy you'll need three things: 1) a well-cut, concentric chamber; 2) a good barrel with appropriate freebore; and 3) a good stock and expert installation job.

HOWA's are basically alot like a Ruger action and stay pretty true to Mauser 98 specs. They are basically Weatherby Vanguards...sold under Howa name...which is who makes the Vanguards anywho.

I would go with a Savage, Tikka, or Remington. If you got the $$ a Surgeon..and if your into BR a Stolle or Stiller OR BAT.

Howa was making 1500 series actions before Weatherby started importing them as Vanguards.

In layout, a Vanguard is close to a cross between a Post-64 Model 70,flat bottomed reciever w/ integral recoil lug and anti-bind rail inside the receiver) and a Remington 700,safety position & function, and general layout of the bolt) with a Sako type extractor thrown in for good measure. Remington pattern scope bases also work with a Vanguard.
