howa 1500 22-250 heavy or light barrel 20 in

I see a deal is out on them and of course, I know nothing a bout Howa rifles for pros and cons. So looking for advice is its a good rig or is it good to build off of. I am looking for a carry coyote gun and maybe some p-dog shooting. A bit more punch than the 223

Just bought one of the PT&G Howa barreled actions in 22-250 Rem on sale. I put it in a Bell & Carlson stock. I have been working on a load for it and have shot several 5 shot groups at 100 yd less than .6 inch. The action feels similar to a Rem 700. The trigger is a good design that can be tuned to a crisp pull of about 2.5 pounds. I have another one in 204 Ruger that shoots lots of half inch groups. These are one of the best kept secrets in the gun world. This is the same action as the Weatherby Vanguard. I think their barrels are as good as any of the mass produced rifles.

Thanks pre64win, those are the ones i seen as well. I cant say that i have heard anything bad about them, most dont know or have not heard any bad about them either. Is yours a heavy or light barrel? what bullet weight you using? I was looking for a carry calling rifle, not a long yardage paper puncher

Mine is a 24" heavy barrel that will be used on prairie dogs. It does not seem to be picky about the bullets I use. I have shot Varmageddon 53, Nosler 55BT, Speer 52 HP and Berger 52 HP and it don't seem make much difference in the accuracy. My friends and I have several Howa rifles with Boyds thumb hole stocks that are not too expensive fit well and make a nice rifle.

I VE BUILT SEVERAL RIFLES OF THE HOWAS ACTIONS THEIR DARN GOOD FOR THE MONEY AND SHOOT VERY WELL ONLY DRAWBACK FOR ME WAS THERE METRIC THEARDED BARRELS

If you are truly wanting a "carry' rifle then go with the light barreled version, I have not weighted one but the heavy barrel version is too heavy for me to consider a "carry" rifle, I am guessing it will weigh 10# or so when scoped and some ammo in the magazine. Fine for shooting off a rest but more weight than I would care to carry very much.

Calibers - the 22/250 is good for about 1200 - 1500 rounds of good accuracy, if you are primarily going for coyotes that is a lot of shooting.
If you are going to throw PD's into the shooting mix then you will go through the 22/250 barrel pretty quickly.
For PD's I prefer the 223, I average 4500 - 5000 rounds before accuracy begins to drop to an unacceptable level.

Just my .02 cents - drover

thanks dover, i have a 20p and a few 223 for most of the pdogs. So i was thinking suppressed light short to make it alittle better to lug around. can always build what i want in the future if i change my mind

I have one of the heavy barrels from PT@G. It really is a heavy sucker with a Bell and carlson stock. (but then, I am an old guy) I have yet to get mine to shoot anything well. I am on my 4th type of bullet, and a boat load of powders. I am starting to think I got a bad barrel. It should not be that hard to get a 22-250 to shoot.

My Howa is the same as yours with the 24" barrel. I ran some loads over the chronograph today at 3706 fps and the group was .454 moa for 5 shots as measured with the On Target PC program. This group was with Nosler 55bt but it also shoots the new Varmageddon 53 into small groups. My groups are all over the target until I get close to or at maximum charge, which suits me, if I want slower I will shoot my 223. H380 and CFE223 both shoot small groups in my Howa.
