How well does it penitrate and expand?

Matrix 165 gr bullet in a 270 WSM. Going cow elk hunting late January 2013. I have no experience with the Matrix bullet but wanted a heavier bullet for the elk. I am getting 3065 ft/sec with 1/2 MOA in a 28" barrel.

That bullet is something that probably a lot of people don't have any experience with, including me. BUT, if you want pentration and expansion, look at the all copper bullets. A Barnes TTSX will do the job in a much lighter bullet. VERY deadly bullets and accurate.

Good. Recommendation on the Barnes. I did the test in sand and did not like the results and contacted Barnes. They said this was a poor medium to test bullet expansion in. Don" t remember what medium besides ballistic gel they said. to use. They have always done a good job on all the animals I've shot with them.

Wet newspaper works OK for testing expansion. I would like to say that I've measured bullets used on critters but I never have recovered one, not even the 22cal x 62 gr we use a lot for culling deer. Right on thru with a big exit hole.

Put the 62gr Barnes in a 223 WSSM and you get very dead deer always with no projectile to recycle.

Let's just say that a 150 or 160 gr partition, 140 or 150 gr TSX, etc. is plenty for the biggest elk made. You don't need to buy a new barrel with a 2 inch faster twist to shoot super heavy bullets to cleanly kill an elk. A friend of mine shot an approximately 800 lb. bull last fall at 347 with a 270 win. Ten steps and plunk. Oh, by the way, he is a wildlife biologist and knows how to measure body dimensions to estimate weight. You don't need to go to super extremes to get the job done neatly.

Had to test the chrono today, and decided I would just do it in the back yard into a bucket of sand. I can say I actually test all my bullets this way. Not the best I agree, but most certinaly the easiest and cheapest and still gives you an idea if they will take care of business or not.

Shot my new blackout with Hornady 130 grn soft points. Since the chrono is not working, I' guessing these are 2200 fps.

i have loaded afriends 270 with the nosler partition 150 and he has taken a number of very large 6 pt elk at up to 375 with only one taking 2 shots.

dont know about barnes but the partition i do know has never failed me in 300's 280ai and his 270 and 280s.

You shouldn't need to waste ammo doing questionable testing. Call or E-Mail people like Hornady and Sierra. Tell them what your cartridge is and what you want to hunt. They will tell you which bullets would work the best. Also check their websites for info.
