How to use JB bore paste and Kroil correctly?

I know they sell a kit with both included. And I also hear a lot of people on here using that combo for tough deposits. Do you only use the JB/kroil when the barrel is new?? Or once and a while down the road for deep cleanings? Or every time?

I only ask because I always hear the joke that barrel makers love it when people use jb. Makes you need a new barrel sooner. So, What is proper technique and how often? And how many passes back and forth with vfg pellets not to over due it?

Thanks everyone

Have not used Kroil in combination with JB before but there may be something to it. Every 500 rounds or so I use JB cleaner, and then polish, as per the instructions on the containers. Applying Kroil instead of or in addition to solvent before the JB Cleaner would help get under the carbon to help loosen it.

Kroil+ JB on a patch wrapped around a bronze brush that is one size larger than the bore affixed to a pistol rod is the perfect carbon ring removal device. Put it in the chamber until it stops and twist the handle and the carbon ring will soon be gone. You can learn a lot with a borescope!

I use Iosso and Kroil on a caliber-specific Ramrodz (gun cleaning Qtip looking thing) to get the carbon out of the grooves in the first few inches of the barrel.

I soak the Ramrodz with Kroil then rub on just a bit of the Iosso. Maybe 10-15 strokes followed by clean patches until most of the black is gone.

Easiest way to tackle that stubborn carbon build up that I’ve found

More good ways posted here.

I have used JB on a patch rapped around a jag with bore cleaner add ? Bore Cleaner Shooters Choice , Old #9 ,Butches flavor of the Month.
Old Wisconsin Barrel Maker told us this 30 years ago + or - .

Used 50 /50 Kriol and Shooters Choice when I used Moly Coated Bullets ?

Will try Kriol and JB next time around .

Don

I use JB Compound and Kroil oil every 3rd cleaning , most of the time I use Ballistol at the range after shooting , 3 or 4 patches with Ballistol , by the time I get home all I need is the old faithful Hoppes #9 and I'm clean . Also KG -1 for carbon and KG -12 for copper works well too . With the JB the Kroil oil removers the compound then is best to clean out with #9 when your ready to shoot for the next time out . I don't like any buildup of any kind , best to shoot with a clean barrel .

Some years ago maybe 15, Walt Berger published his personal cleaning procedure with JB and Kroil. At the time Walt was a big fan of Moly coated bullets and I believe his recommendations were for barrels shooting those coated bullets. I run across my copy from time to time in the boxes of good stuff I've collected. If I can find it tomorrow I'll post it.

It used to be on Bergers website

Q: If I use Moly Coated bullets how should I clean my barrel?
A: The following is one way to clean when using Moly Coated bullets. It is not likely the only way you can clean if you are using Moly Coated bullets.

1. Push one patch wet with Kroil Oil through the barrel
2. Repeat step 1.
3. Push one dry patch through the barrel.
4. Repeat step 3.
5. Push one patch wet with Butch's Bore Shine through the barrel.
6. Repeat step 5.
7. Let the barrel soak for 5 to 10 minutes.
8. Push one dry patch through the barrel.
9. Repeat step 8.
10. Using short strokes back and forth push one patch wet with USP or JB Bore Paste through the barrel.
11. Push one patch wet with Kroil through the barrel.
12. Repeat step 11 twice.
13. Push one dry patch through the barrel.
14. Repeat step 13 three times.
15. Use bore scope or visually inspect muzzle for copper fouling.
16. If copper is present repeat steps 10 through 15.
17. If you are storing the rifle push one patch wet with quality gun oil through the barrel.

Capt. Oblivious- would kroil be a suitable oil for storage? If not what would you recommend?

Before I had air conditioning in my shop, oxidation started all the ground machine surfaces, i.e., mill table, table saw, planer, etc., during humid months. I would periodically wipe them down with 0000 steel wool and various lubricants, WD40, Kroil, etc.

By far, the longest lasting anti-oxidation product I found was good old Marvel's Mystery Oil.

I've used it in my barrel cleaning process ever since..... mainly as the last step for storage. However, it seems to have the same penetrating/lifting characteristics as Kroil.

Even if #9 is not that effective I'm at the age I just like the smell of it

Yes. Every cleaning I open the bottle of Hoppes #9.
Clean the rifle without touching the #9
End of cleaning I put the cap back on.
Just never seems right without that smell. It has lasted me a long time.

Doesn't hurt that the olfactory senses bring back the most vivid memories either.
