how to practice 600 BR targets on steel????

flexible

Hi everyone; flexible here.
I'll be moving to North Carolina in the spring and hope to continue my BR matches. Looks like I'll be shooting at 100, 300 and 600 yards.
I found 2 ranges within an hour drivetime that go out to 600 yards BUT it's steel.
Has anyone figured out how to duplicate a paper target on steel?
thanks

I'll be shooting for groups not just hitting the steel. I guess I'll have to work with the ranges to see what they allow: i.e. taping paper to the steel, painting targets on the steel, etc.

At the range I recently joined, there's a road along the side of the 600 yard range that you can drive out on and place your own stand if desired. We're not very busy, and I'm often the only one on the range so it's pretty comfortable. jd

Paper target taped to steel is going to get shredded pretty bad with the first shot. Hopefully the range will allow you to set up a stand alone frame for a paper target. Getting a cold range to go check/retrieve the target may be problematic.

UM How about a Shot Marker target (personal self owned) set up out there? You will get a lot more out of that than banging a plate. Obviously if steel only ranges maybe talk to an RO or board member.
I use my personal etarget out to a 1000 yds. if the range has the distance.
Nice part of that would be knowing which shots are which if you question a load or an off call shot.

Not sure where you're gonna be located at but NC has one of the best 600yd ranges (Piedmont gun club) in the world. I'ts near Rutherfordton. Just be aware, you're stepping into the lions den there. Them boys know how to shoot.

There used to be a place that advertised on here (Field & Cave, I think) that sold steel targets with BR scoring rings etched (using water jet, maybe). Pretty sure they're not longer in business, but you might be able to find someone else to do something similar for you. Personally I'd probably just invest in a ShotMarker, make a collapsible frame that you can set up on site and staple a regulation IBS 600 BR target face on it.

Our range has a hanging steel target at 600 yds that is the size of the F-class 10 ring. Bang in 20 out of 20 and you shot a "clean".

thanks everyone, lots of great ideas.

i wish i had some kind of glass that i could see 6mm holes at 600 yards. our range furnishes the paint to paint the steel. you can see your hits through your scope easy at 600 on a white painted steel plate. at least i can at 42X or higher—. you can shoot a group on a plate and see it through your scope. shooting at a paper target youre shooting blind at 600.. bring your own paint and paint a spot to shoot at on the plate. no target to save i know. sometimes i do put cardboard and paper target out if i need to see whats going on thats bigger than the plate. Of coarse theres always E target if youre that serious.

I bought my own Shotmarker this year - thought that it would be useful for sighting in at Homerange's place. ( Thanks Rob) but - I find it just as useful to use for practice at another range, where I can place it at 500/600 and practice - without several hundred yds of walking to change targets. You don't need a full size target board - mine has an 800mm by 800mm sensor area and fits in the back of my 4x4. I use a 75mm coloured dot as an aiming mark. The frame was cut out of 1/2 in ply and I use screw in tent pegs and a couple of aluminium tubes to support it. ( sorry about the pommie spelling...)

As mentioned, our range is pretty informal, and not real busy. I can even take my own steel if I want to. And since I can drive out to distance in my vehicle, I'll probably start doing that. I might as well use my own paint on my own steel. jd

I was team firing with partner during the Sierra Cup Sling Team Midrange Match this summer, using his Kowa prominar I was seeing 6mm holes with ease from a seated position while coaching him. Holy Cow I had never been able to do that.

For the price of that Optic I could buy a few Etargets. But yeah wo that was impressive.

Also as noted already I run a 4x4' frame for my etarget. 600 yd MR or F repair centers work great on that size. Cloroplast or Choroplast is my backer. I have had it there for some years now. That backer holds up and does not degrade like carboard. Big hole in the center of it these days but it works. Good luck

Sorry for the odd post format something went wrong

Not sure who/where that second quote came from... but I'd challenge that it's *highly* unlikely that even premo glass can do that (black holes in the black of the target center, amongst all the other 'clutter' like plasters, scoring rings, wrinkles in the paper after a repair center is slapped on) under *all* lighting conditions.

With the right light, at the right angle, and little to no mirage, sure. The rest of the time... I seriously doubt it.

It was part of my reply, hence the disclaimer that the post got jacked up. Everything from the I was team firing is my reply.

Indeed I was easily seeing holes on the MR target in Late May 2024 during Sling Team Match Sierra Cup at Bench Rest Club. Being up off the deck mirage was light I was using my scope for mirage while using Dave's Prominar for the impacts. We had the two spotting scopes so I just used one for mirage and the other to see impacts. It was crazy but a $3000+ spotting scope may be that good on a good day.
Im used to having my spotter while in position even on a team or pair fire match, Dave on the other hand does nothing but was his coaching partner tells him, his job is to shoot when told and break center shots. He is hard core like that. and damn good shooter.

Hope that helps give clarity.
