How to keep deer away from hog feeders

HA!!! I’m up here in Kerrville. I was told that they were “everywhere” before I moved here! I got very excited! I was planning on shooting a passel of them. Then I got here. I haven’t seen a ONE on the 300+ acres that surrounds my house and I’ve hunted and poked in every corner of the property for the past 6 years! I’d like to think they heard I was coming and vamoosed! The reality is, I think, that we have a lot of good hunters in the area and they’re keeping the population down.
A fellow I work with hunts north of you in Gillespie county outside Fredericksburg and he told me he doesn't have pigs running through his property like most others do elsewhere in the state, so you may be right about the hunters you have around you keeping them in check.

I have shot 5 hogs in the last two weeks but dam the deer are eating most all of the corn I am putting out for the hogs. I have seen as many as 7 deer on one feeder. I am running 3 cel cams and the deer burnt up all of my monthly data as they wont leave so I get pictures every 15 minutes 24/7
You got a deer problem sounds like as well…

We do have a few packs of Coyotes running in the area. I wonder if they have an effect on the pigs getting a foothold?

Good point to ponder Josh but I would think a pack of big pigs wouldn't back down from coyotes.
I asked the fellow about the lack of pigs on the property he hunts that I mentioned last post and he thinks they don't see any pigs because there is a lack of water on the property and the nearest sizable ponds and creeks are a good distance away.

Use a pig trap instead of a feeder. The local conservation distric has 2 full time employees working on pig irradication. They carry a number of nasty diseases. I would never eat one.

Ok! Will ponder. There are 2 ponds and a spring on the property. Must be something else.

you're on the lucky or unlucky 10% of the land that has no pigs ???

We have had them here for years however the last few years they have been all but absent.. Hate to jinx us by saying that !

Good luck!

Duh, don’t put the sour corn in the feeders. Just sour it up in 5 gal buckets and hand scatter it. The Hogs love this stuff. We used high sugar soft drinks like Coke to ferment the corn but these days cheap beer might be cheaper than Coke! Also put the 5 gal buckets way up on something tall and be sure the lids are on tight otherwise the Hogs will find it when you aren’t ready to ambush them.
Hey! Finally a use for bud light!

Josh, the sheep and goat farmers go after those hogs with a vengeance as they will swiftly consume newborns. They will leave nothing.

Hog roll barrel corn feeder.
-
Get a 30gal barrel with 3" threaded fittings on one end.
Attach a Heavy Duty eye bolt close to one of the 3" openings.
Attach braided steel cable (3/16 - 1/4" works) to the eye bolt.
Include two extra Heavy Duty swivels inline with the cable.
Attach cable end away from barrel to 3" steel ring (Tractor Supply)
Set T-post in ground where you want to attract hogs.
Drill 2 to 3 - 1/2" holes - no more- around barrel.
Add no more than 30-40 lbs corn to hog roll barrel.
Pour remaining 10-20lbs corn on ground immediately adjacent to barrel..

Note Heavy Duty in bold above. Hogs will root and launch the barrel in the air... enough times and a light/cheap item will break...

Drop 3" steel ring over top of your T-post - wait a couple days, and start shooting hogs!

I remember one time in NorCal we were going hunting on a sheep ranch in the dark, pre-dawn, and I had to open up a gate right by an old lambing barn. A huge boar hog came running out of the barn, right past the truck headlight beams, and I clearly saw a lamb leg poking out of his mouth! Nasty critters.
