How to install a Mauser 98-extractor collar

Can any body give me any tips on installing a Mauser 98-extractor collar? It is the split ring on the bolt that the extractor slides over. I am aware of the ' bolt extractor pliers' that are available through Brownells etc. but these are for installing the extractor on to the extractor collar. I need to install the extractor collar itself. Is there a special tool for this or any tricks to keep from springing the ring when trying to replace it onto the bolt? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

There may be a special tool made just for this purpose but I'm not aware of one and I doubt if it would be free. Since this is a once or twice in a lifetime operation, do what I do - simply open the ring until it will slide over the bolt body. It should be soft enough that nothing will be harmed. The same procedure can be used for similar bolts such as the old M70 and the 03 Springfield.

You just spread the collar apart with your thumbs and pop it over the grove on the bolt. Then use the extractor pliers to clamp it together to slide the extractor into place.

Use a penny or a dime. My 'smith showed me how to do it.

If it's a new collar the foreward edges of the "hooks" that engage the extractor itself need to be beveled a little. Otherwise it will be very hard to install the extractor. If it's a used one make sure the beveled edges are facing the front of the bolt. The only weak spot that could be a problem is the wear caused by the ejector sliding over it, on a used collar.

I just slipped one on this morning, I cut the metal that was holding it together with a gang of cutoff blades in a Dremel tool and opened it up enough to slip it on the bolt, and slid the extractor on.. No special tools were used....

If the collar has been stretched out, then getting the extractor back on can be frustrating.
I pinch the collar in modified V blocks to get it together enough to install the extractor.
