How to go about finding value?

I have a buddy who bought a savage 12 LRPV chambered in 22/250. After messing with a bit we decided to swap barrels and ordered a criterion and go/no gauges. Much better results. There is about 20-25 rounds down new barrel. He put a Murphy stainless picatinney rail on it. Anyway he has some unplanned issues which result in trying to sell this rifle.
My question is the rifle itself is pretty darn near perfect. New and stock barrel are here.
How do we come up with an asking price that won’t be offensive and also won’t loss a boat load of his investment.
Sorry if this is a silly question I just have never sold a complete rifle.
Thank you for the time.
Appreciate it.

I would start out high and you can always go down. If the barrel count checks out and it's correct I would personally value it pretty high. Somewhere around $1,000-$1,400

The new barrel has a great reputation and the stock and action are a great combination.

Brand New they are a little over $1600

I think he paid $1750. or so for rifle.
Another $400-$450 for barrel.
There is probably 100-125 rounds on the original barrel. And literally no more than 25 through the new. I know that part for a fact since I reloaded for him.
Thanks for the response.

Since it’s “lightly used, I would start the pricing at 10% off total investment. Tell the whole story in the ad and hope somebody wants it. You might get lucky.

I sadly think that savages don’t hold their value despite them being great shooting guns and only own 1 currently (model 12 bvss 22-250), I don’t really keep up on values much anymore.

I will get some pictures and post it in classifieds if owner gives green light.
He is definitely in a jam but reluctant to let it go.

I think that selling here on the forum usually gives both parties a great and safe value.
Most of us here would rather be skun alive than cheat another member with a crappy or dishonest deal. And most would probably feel safer to spend our money - even top dollar, for an item being sold by a member in good standing.
AND - the forum provides great opportunities for lots of good pics, and a "back and forth" dialogue.

Anyway that's the way I feel about it. jd
