How to best repair this broken stock

:'( I just got this and it was damaged by fed-ex in shipping. I feel like the crack is not super deep but it does run around the handle to some degree right where your palm would go. I dont want it to get worse mainly. How should this be repaired and who should be good at it? I am open to all ideas but prefer some options that have been tried before. I think a drilled hole with a wood screw epoxy and a wrap of some type would be very strong and I could live with that. Thank for any suggestions or help. :'( PG

If you want someone else to take care of it I would send it back to Alex Sitman at Master Class. Just ordered a stock from him and it sounds like his usual wait times are substantially reduced right now. Other wise, if it were me, I would drill a 1/2" hole from inside the stock, where the tang of the action stops, down into the middle of the pistol grip. Then epoxy a piece of 1/2" round stock or threaded stock in place to make sure it is strong. At the same time force a little Acraglass or clear expoxy into the crack from the outside to fill it and strengthen it. Even if it cracked all the way through (which it doesn't seem happened) this would work.
Isn't the shipper going to help you with this though?

I have fixed alot of recurve bows with loctite 420 which is a cyanacrylic super glue. You drip it into the crack and keep dripping it in till it quits taking it and find a way to clamp it lightly till it dries(overnight to full cure) then refinish the stock. This stuff is stronger than epoxy and its viscosity is like water. The thicker 495 would work but unless the crack was wider I wouldnt use it.I have fixed some severly cracked stocks with good results.

Jonbearman thanks for the idea. If it can fix a bow and hold it will hold on this crack too. PG

PGG,

Please no disrespect to jonbearman, but I would certainly want to go with a structural fix with an epoxy material. I am unaware that CA glue has any structural properties towards a fix such as this, I could be wrong and it wouldnt be the first time... WaterCam is spot on with the proper repair IMHO.

But CA glue with fill that crack & buff out really nice..

Rod

Rero (like msc) sells the 420 adhesive.A place like mcmaster carr. These are industrial supply houses.Rero supply is the place I bought it at and is nationwide like mcmaster carr. Some loctite dealers like car parts places can order it.

Someone had to really abuse the package to dothat kind of damage to a laminated stock. Were there any tire tracks on it ???

i think he is talking about industial supply companies .drill it and fill it with epoxy. of cousre you have to pry it open to get it in . T.R.

Re read my post and it will work.I did a browning patent shotgun butt that had about 3 major cracks and filled it with loctite 420 and clamped it the best I could and touched up the checkering. It is hard to tell and that was 6-8 years ago.

If it came that way thru UPS or Fed Ex, my 1st question would be how much $ was it insured for? There is an automatic $200 on anything UPS or Fed Ex. ::)

The seller and I agreed (from pre-shipping images) it was broken when sold and not noticed by me in the images or the seller. I didnt notice until I was mounting the scope and holding it to confirm the scope seamed straight. He offered a full refund however I want to keep the gun. I still need to repair the stock properly to make sure it wont snap plus its right on your shooting hand palm and you feel it each time you pick it up. Thank you to each and all that offers answers and advice it is appreciated. Thank you PG

I have used 3/16" SS threaded rod for fixes like this. Force epoxy in crack, predrill rod hole, sharpen the tip of the rod, clamp the crack tightly closed, epoxy the rod and drill hole, thread the rod into the hole until all the way thru, cut off rod, grind ends flush with wood.

How about turning in a claim on fed ex for concealed damage? I would. The worst they can do is deny it but you have a case. Was the shipment insured by the shipper?

Did you order a damaged stock?

If not, return to sender. You have know way of knowing for sure who or how it was damaged.

Did you intend to purchase a damaged stock and then turn around and pay more of your hard earned cash to have it repaired. I hope your answer is no.

RETURN TO SENDER.
