How to avoid shooting chrono

I used to have a chrono with 3 sky screens. It wanted to be 15' off the muzzle. This is how poor people set one up. Get some cotton string about 20'. Tie a loop knot on one end. Loop it under your scope ring and through other end of line. Pull that tight. Hold it along barrel and have someone measure whatever distance you need off you barrel, only have to do this once. Mark this with pen or tie a knot there. When you set up crono just pull sting tight and sight along barrel. One guy can set it up every time very quickly. Of course you need to keep the string for future use.

take a cheap laser made to put in the end of the barrel [ but don't put it there]

remove the bolt and place it in the action so it shines down the barrel.

place your hand or hat at the chrono to line it up.

If you turn your magnification all the way down...not sure how far is necessary but I know 3-6 works...you can see the skyscreens and line everything up visually to shoot through the center.

Before I left my cave and came to the 21st century, I would get the rifle on target, remove the bolt then look through the screens from the front. I would then adjust the tripod until I had a clear line of sight in the scope the was near the top of the screens.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

Anyone that actually shoots a MagnetoSpeed should probably consider switching to one of the benchrest disciplines where no one ever measures velocity, or maybe taking up trap/skeet ;).

One of the last times I went to Butner, somebody launched a Magnetospeed down range.

Take a golf ball. Super glue a 6" piece of string to it with a loop. Hang it from your sun shade on your chrony right in the middle. Move the chrony until you are just seeing the target over the ball in your scope on low power. It will be perfectly centered.

Line the gun up on your target, I tape piece of cardboard that I have a 1" dot on the front screen and line it up for the dot in the middle looking through the bore. then do the same to each till they are good by looking through the bore, easy no wrecks....... jim

You're not an expert unless you've shot at least one! I nailed a chrono a couple years ago when a strong gust of wind blew it over. An expensive mistake. The angle of the legs on the tripod raised it up as it went over. As far as alignment, I just sight down the top and side of the barrel and try to get the path half way up, 5-6 inches above the sensors.
