How The World's Finest Shotguns Are Made

I knew a guy that pushed barbed wire fences down with a $15,000 Perazzi but anything beyond that stresses my imagination.
The late Nick Marino, as close to a world class shot gunner as you could ever meet, had a custom built Perrazi that was very functional, and also beautiful.
They even flew him over to Italy for a precise fitting of the stock.
I visited him one day at the Golden Triangle Gun Club near Beaumont when he was practicing. I marveled at how well that Perrazi looked on his hands as he nailed clay after clay.

Nick had a good sense of humor and said, “watch this”. He took out a regular Remington 870 and continued to do the same thing.
Bob Estes, who was with us, jokingly said…..”don’t ever go quail hunting with nick. He will hit every bid that flushes.”

When I attended GS 35+ years ago, there were many, many things still required be done using hand tools, files, stones, wet n dry paper wrapped around a a block of wood, chisels, gouges and the 'patternmakers' file/rasp. Here, 2yrs is gun smithing school (now, some offer 4yrs, the 4yrs being CNC and machine tech). If you apply yourself and pay attention, you can come away with a 'beginning' in those 2yrs. Helps immensely if you happen to have a background in job shop, manual machining, knowing how to layout a task/job, or another like, hands on trade. In Western Europe, they apprentice for 10yrs or more. At the time I attended school there was , also, a 1yr firearms engraving program. Many of those students took the class more than just the 1yr. (if they could). Don't know what the GS schools do now, much of the curriculum is toward machining and CNC, hand work being secondary. Depends on "which" school, I'd say.

A couple of Purdy's that start around $175,000

Some will say Heresy but you can get an American made in the $20,000 vicinity that arguably is better made.
