How slick are your bags?

For you br shooters shooting free recoil, just how slick do you like your bags? I generally try to keep mine pretty slick, leather ears in the rear with teflon tape and silicone, dry cordura up front wax on the stock. I have a front bag on order with the new super slick material. I would like to slick up the rear bag more if I could, but wonder if slicker is always better. I noticed today while shooting that a light hold seemed to shoot pretty well which led me to think my bags may be a little sticky.

I ordered a piece of slick materal from protecter and cut a piece that fits inside my rear bag works great . Be carefull if you free recoil your gun will slide in your lap.😳

I am going to try that. I have read it works well on leather.

I watched Chales Huckeba win the 2013 World BR Championships using Edgewood Super Slick bags front and rear. I discussed it with Charles at the WBC and he was very happy with the set up.

However it is worth taking a look at page 13 of the march issue of the NBRSA Precision Rifleman publication (http://issuu.com/precisionrifleman/docs/2014_03_online). There is some great information in this issue, but in particular, Bart Sauter comments that he believes bag/rifle combinations can be too slick.

In the very short time I have been using my super slick bag, I have lost one or two shots during matches that I couldn't otherwise explain. This has got me reevaluating my bag set-up, and I think I will go back to my old cordura version of the rear bag for a while to see if that cures the problem.

Thanks for the link. Pretty interesting read. It looks like having extremely slick bags can exaggerate shooter error in his opinion, not actually cause the gun to shoot erratic. So if you did not make any errors the slick bags shouldn't be an issue. I don't think we could get bags slick enough to pull a 17 lb gun back with a 2 oz. trigger unless you really jerked it. My bags are not very slick, but they are not stocky either. The leather rear bag gives me most of the friction. Have some hbn on the way to try.

Try used fabric softener paper from the wife's dryer laid on the bags sprinkled with Sinclair bag wax.

I'm using a Protektor Cordura bag and a Farley cordura front bag in my Co-Ax II rest. I also have an unpainted, but waxed, McMillan Edge LV stock. I have gone from really smooth, LIGHT pull to a heavy tightness on the front bag, based on Bart's article. Now the gun slides smoothly, just not really easy like before. I've tried the silver material from Protektor, but don't really care for it - feels/sounds like the gun is sliding over sandpaper. With the gun held tighter in the front/rear bags, and just the cordura material, I have fewer un-explained shots now. It might be due to the lack of "wobble" in the bags now. Before, when the bags were looser, I could see a small amount of movement when I was sighting/aiming or moving the gun back/forth in the bags; that's gone now.

Dennis, is your cordura dry or did you spray it with silicone? How does your rear bag fit? Do you have to tap the butt down or does it drop in easily?

My cordura is clean, nothing applied to it. My rear bag has 3 seams and the stock drops right in. I'm thinking of replacing it with a 2-stitch bag for a little better "hold" on the stock. I usually fluff up the rear bag ears, then pound the stock into it until it bottoms out. I'm also thinking of just putting something in the bottom to keep the stock off the stitches, but so far it's fine.
