How popular are CCI 450 Small Rifle Primers?

Started using the 450s in my service rifle AR back in 95. Some thought that was odd, a magnum primer on a 223. Load work at 600 yards (tested most primers and available powder) and scores in matches at 6 confirmed I was on the right track.

I've been torturing myself with the current CCI 41s/450s lately. They are horrible. Crazy SDs, popping primers like popcorn. I have like 2k and have to figure out some use.

I shot some 75 gr RMR OTMs in .223 last Saturday with the same Varget charge, and the CCI 41s goosed the load by 77 fps over WOLF primers and had an SD in the 50s.

Ball powder and 55 gr FMJ garbage ammo is looking like the only option.

I made it to the range this morning. It was pretty cool, 45 degrees and breezy. I set up my Ohler 35 Chronograph.

I loaded up my standard load of 35.0 grns of 4198, which gave an average 3060 fps on this morning.

Without changing anything, I loaded using the 450’s.

The average velocity was exactly he same. But the accuracy was at best sub par.

I tried a couple of adjustments, went up and down on the charge a little. No improvement.

I went back to the Genex primers and the rifle returned to normal. I also loaded some with 205’s, Rifle shot great.

My best friend Ed said he tried some 450’s a while back in his 30BR, which uses the same chamber as mine, with the same results.

However, they are the go to primer in his Dasher and BR-A.

Next week end I will try them in my 6BR with the 80 grn Barts.

What were the groiup size differences?

Jackie, my groups improved in my 2 dashers with 450's when I seated the primers .006 below flush. I did several tests before I came up with that number. Your mileage may vary.

Wish I could find h4895.
Local reloading shop near me is selling them for 140-150 per thousand

Jackie I tried 450's in my 30BR just for shits and giggles and they weren't as good whatsoever in that round. I tried BR4's and never got them to shoot as well as regular 205's. Now the BR4's outperformed the 205's in my 30x47 by a wide margin but I'm using 43.5 to 44 grains of N133 in that cartridge. The 205's just didn't ignite that amount of 133 too well.

Brownells had CCI BR4 yesterday for $165
Brownell's has been hosing there buyers every time they get any in, I have been watching and when Powder Valley has been getting any they have been 400's or 450's. Brownell's seems to be trickling them in about the same time but instead of $105.00 a thousand Brownell's has stayed north of $160.00.

Sad thing is Powder Valley after charging Has Mat, only allows a 1000 per customer per purchase. Nice they don't jack the price up, and trying to keep scalpers from ripping folks off. But Brownell's answer seem's to be cut the scalpers out, and pocket the over charges to themselves!

I tried a difference with the same load in my BR, not much difference. But I keep hearing the cci-450 and 400's have this harder cup. In the 6BR pushing it hard with 108's and 4350 34.5 grains I was blanking 1 or 2 out of 5, the 205's I wasn't. But the 450's did shoot better with that ONE LOAD.

My 6x47 Lapua, and 6mm AI, I did get slightly better accuracy with the 250's using H4350, H4831, and IMR7828.

I then tested them with the 95 grain bibs and seen little difference, with H-4350, But my 6mm PPC, or my 1-10 twist 6BR with 68 grain and lighter bullets, 205M's make a difference.
