How Peterson Cartridge Company decides on new cartridge brass

I think the main reason nobody makes brass that Short Range Benchrest Shooters use is because we are so darned anal about everything.

I credit the success many of us have in Short Range Benchrest to the 220 Russian Case and the 6BR Norma case.

A top quality 30 BR would be great. How many 6BR cases a year sold by Lapua end up as 30BR? But anything brought out would have to be as good as Lapua, both in strength and precision of manufacture.

True, Norma brought out their 6PPC case. But as usual, the screwed it up. The diameter at the web is .0025 smaller than what the vast Majority of Benchrest Shooter’s reamers, which are based on a blowed out 220 Russian. The necks are also too thin. A case with a seated bullet will exhibit close to .0025 clearance before turning in a .269 neck. After just a very light cut to get them concentric, they have close to .004.

And their alloy simply is not as strong.

I tried some, and at 3400+ FPS, it was dead after three firings.

With all due respect to the OP, the biggest complaint about Remington is their quality control in keeping consistent wall thickness is pretty bad. The brass is plenty strong, just not very well manufactured when it comes to precision. Off center flash holes are pretty common.

But even Lapua can get it wrong. Last year, I bought 100 Lapua 30-06 cases. The neck uniformity was pretty bad, some as much as .002 difference in wall thickness. In my opinion, that’s a lot, especially when you are not turning necks.

If you did bring out a 6PPC or 30 BR case, make the dimensions closer to what BR Shooters use. Forget about all of that Sako and PPC USA stuff. Find out what we are using.

I concur with Jackie’s statement.

I know I made up way too many 6PPC and 30BR cases from 220 Russian and 6mmBR virgin brass last year.

I recently purchase some 6mmBR and 7mmBR brass from Peterson Brass and found it to be quite uniform in weight and dimensions. I was hoping that the 7mmBR could be made into 30BR to gain some wall thickness for turning but after expanding the case length ended up 0.040” short of my normal case length before the shoulder was bumped back. All the other case dimensions are so close to spec that I was hoping I could get away from all the work expanding the Lapua 6mmBR brass.

So, I am again voting for 30BR or even longer then spec 7mmBR brass and 6PPC brass.

Ok folks ,
After meeting with our President , I've come up with answers for everyone's questions about how we decide what brass were going to make.
First off , our priority is to keep up with the 35 cartridges we're making now. That being said , we also have 12-15 cartridges we are actively pursuing (no , I cannot discuss what they are , sorry).
So , into the general process........
1. Is a cartridge already on our radar?
2. Is it brass people are wanting ?
3. Do we make anything in that family of cartridges already?
4. Cost of development. If its not in a family we already do , the tooling costs can be extremely expensive.
5. Is there a market for it?
A. Is it a growing caliber ?
B. Is it a dying caliber ?

Now , for all you guys that I am certain are trying to figure out what the 12-15 are we are actively pursuing........
1.Some are a family of cartridges we already make
2. Some are in fact new all together.

I know that some are going to want to know more but as things continue to grow we will continue to release more information at the appropriate times.

We have heard all of your requests and all have been looked at. My hope is that this helps answer the questions being asked a couple weeks ago. Schedules and timing were tricky and I apologize for the delay. Please feel free to continue with your suggestions , and comments. The feedback has been fantastic and the entire Peterson Team thanks you for your input and support of our products.

Thanks for your post, but I can say DEFINITIVELY that you are doing this wrong. The correct process is to contact ME, and then when I tell you I want 300 WSM brass you should make it immediately. ;)

First of all, I have to say it is really nice to see a manufacturer directly communicating with the end users. Second, I vote for some 6.5 PRC brass. Seems like it is always in short supply.

Great post.

Needed everyone's input and we greatly appreciated all the input we got !

Why can't people who are already making .25-06 brass neck it up a smidgen and put a 6.5-06 ABCDE headstamp on it? Is the 6.5-06 A Square copyright protected somehow?

There is one small place down in Texas that sells loaded 6.5-06 ammo, but they use Hornady 25-06 brass. How the Hell does Hornady let them get away with that? Who would be liable if it got into a novice's hands and they actually tried to fire it in a .25-06?

Wouldn't you at least use a match bullet in match grade ammo?
https://dallasreloads.com/product/129-nosler-long-range-acubond/

Also how many pieces would one have to buy in order to make it worth Hornady's time?

1,000,000? Half of that? Twice that?

I know you can't speak for them, but maybe an educated guess?
