How much neck tension do I have now

6.5 PRC ADG brass Neck after FL sizing .290 ,neck wall .015-.016 Bullet diameter .262(Why isn't it .264) loaded round neck is .2955 ? How much tension do I have ? If I wanted to remove expander button and use mandrel to achieve .002 ,what size mandrel would I want ?

If u have loaded round neck @.2955 U would need to use a .293 bushing to get app. .002 tension according to Redding instructions. Hard to say about mandrel with an undersized bullet diameter.

.2955- .290= .0055 neck tension

if neck wall is .015 to .016 then I'd calculate using a thickness between, like .0155, therefore:

.0155x2=.031+.262=.293-002=.291 (this would be the OD measurement to look for)

Allowing for a little springback, I might go with .2605 mandrel ( note: I stand corrected as chromatica below is correct).

But . . . you said your loaded round is .2955 and if that's so, then it seems your neck wall thickness is more like .01675 with a bullet diameter of .262???

Sorry but a mandrel has to mate to the inside diameter of the neck, not the outside. Try .262 - .002 = .260 mandrel. With springback you might end up with a little more than .002 neck tension. I use the Lee collet die as an expander. .260 is a standard undersize mandrel you can order from Lee. It's the odd sizes that have to be custom made.

I'm not well versed on 6.5 bullets (other than load development for a friend's 6.5 Swede), but I question the .262" bullets. I think they might cause more problems than just neck tension. How many problems are they going to create in a supposedly .264" bore? I know .002" isn't much, but how in the world did those bullets end up that much too small? Not nit-picking, just wondering.
