how much is too much?

Hello all. I recently purchased a savage pta rifle with f-class stock with criterion barrel. It weighs approx 16.5 lbs. I will be shooting at 200 yards at my house with a range close by with 600 yards. Would a fixed 36x scope be too much or should I drop down to maybe 24x or even a variable power scope. I won't be able to go Nightforce, March...or the likes. Thinking maybe weaver fixed or sightron fixed. Thanks! Jonathan Taylor

On "most days" you'll be okay until it starts getting really hot. - I shoot in So. Central La. where the summer days are not only hot but humid as well. - A variable power would be nice but not mandatory as it offers the ability to turn it down on those heavy mirage days. - I'd say with a 36x fixed your going to be okay 90% of the time or more. - One suggestion, use a mirage shield on your barrel, it will help a lot especially on those hot days. - A fixed Weaver or Sightron should provide good service indeed.

I have a 10 - 50 sightron and compete in south Mississippi where its 95 degrees with 100 percent humidity all summer. Usually I have it set to 30-35 power at 600. I think you'll be ok with a 36 fixed. That extra 10 power makes a big difference for seeing your exact point of aim.

O.K. Thank you. I forgot to mention that I am in central Illinois. We get some heat and humidity(caught a break the last two days). I did see some cool mirage guards for sale on here too. This rifle is a different critter than my Granddad's 1982 vintage Ruger 22-250 varmint. It wears a Chinese 6-24-40 and all you need to do is pick a 55 grain bullet add some Varget, 3031, 4064, CFE223 or about any suitable powder, load to C.O.L. and shoot inside 1/2 inch about all day. A Weaver T-24 will serve you well. The T-36 gets unusuable in heavy mirage: have used both of these. Better scopes might be ok at 36x but this weaver, not.

I shoot from 100-1000 regulary. A variable would be the way to go. Sightron are a great scope for the money or a used NF Benchrest 12x42 can had for $900-$1000.

Is this a weight concern. If not a variable power is what most of us use.

Mine is a compromise between power exit pupil and internal adjustment 8x32x56 I see 6 mm holes at 600 in most conditions

Thank you all for the input. Just had the berm completed last week, now we're off for the weekend. Then next week, it's time for VBS at church and then the Grand American at Sparta and so on and so forth. Maybe Santa can bring me a scope, I'll put it on the list!
