How many?

How many AR15 type rifles are there really in America?
Yes I know roughly how many two of our least favorite presidents sold for us and I do thank them very much for helping the second amendment.
However since I don't know how you could get even a reasonable count of complete rifles sold during the last twenty years or so, and that's just complete rifles.

There is no way to add in all the kits, uppers, lowers or people putting some together out of spare parts that were just laying around their gun room. Soooo, how many?

A federal excise tax is collected on all complete rifles, so I bet they know exactly how many. On the rest not so much. How many, I have no idea and neither do they. But i guess they could some close if they want to. But they will doctor the number to suit their agenda. You will not get a good answer, from government.

There is the standard military gas (not really but direct impingement), piston, direct impingement with a side bolt handle and piston with a side bolt handle. I know some of both have been configured for single shot. Some of each I guess with no buffer spring assembly.

I guess about 7 types. The only difference really besides these features is the barrel length.
