How many use IMR 4064 in 6mmRem...need help

I am loading for a stock Rem 700VLS in 6mm Rem, factory barrel 9 1/4 twist, it's been bedded and trigger work done. I'm using both Sierra 95gr BTHP and Berger 95gr VLD bullets. Seating .025" jump for Sierra's and VLD's are jammed .015" off the lands, with 38.4 grs IMR 6064. I get really good 3 shot groups with both bullets...as soon as I fire #4 and 5 the groups always open up to about 1 1/2" to 2" with the 1st 3 shots being around a little less then 1/2" to 5/8" at 200 yds. I use flags, shooting in calm mornings, and keep same hold shooting off a front rest and rear bag with sling studs removed. Barrel now has 497 rds thru it. The barrel does get pretty warm in just a few shots. I do let the barrel cool down between groups. I always full length size my case and use a Wilson seater, weigh every charge as well..
Looking for some help if any out there for this powder?
Thanx again for your time,
Rmist

HI Misty,,,Im not shure about your powder,,,Im old and broke down and outa touch,,but no matter what powder ,,,,your groups are not too bad for a factory rifle in a deer hunting cal. at 200 yds!!!,,,most of these .100-.200" groups that you hear about on the internet are halucinations (sp-haha) on the part of the keyboard experts....try shooting a lil faster and get the group done before the bbl gets real hot.....and keep the bore as clean as possible ....clean-clean-clean that is how you get to Carnegie hall....Roger

i have used imr 4064 in 2 6mm with excellent results the experience you are haveing is strange to me and i think more to the rifle, shooter than the powder

So I guess Id have to follow bheads thinking a little farther.

So you shoot 3 very satisfactorly and the 4 nd 5 are not so good..

What happens if you walk down and change targets and get more ammo-same or the other bullet and start again-ie another 5 shot group??
What will/does it look like?

Does cleaning (couple dry ones) between groups make a difference?

IMR 4064 with 70 grain Sierras shoots 5 shot groups in the 4's out of my Cooper Varmint Extreme. Good powder for my rig. As always, YRMV.

I usually don't walk down range until I'm finished shooting. But I do let the barrel cool down between strings. I haven't tried to clean between groups. Even after a cool down session it will do the same thing. I will have to take a pic next time out to the range of the targets. It does it with different bullets as well. Driving me crazy !! I should be able to fire a least 8-10 shots in a relay for g-hog matches. When on home range taking my time and everything set the same as far as rest setup and hold...still does it. I have cleaned the barrel out with sweets the other night. Will have to wait and see how it does. I normally clean with shooters choice. Occasionally wipe out.

Rmist,

i think your rifle is fine, your loads are fine,

consider the technique, cheek, shoulder trigger hand grip/presure, front bag position re forend, rear bag position re butt/shoulder, and do you have sling studs in the stock. the more shoulder pressure you exert, the lower the point of impact, the less shoulder pressure the higher impact.

the same is true of hand grip.

Oh! So you're trying to tune it up for g-hog matches. Yep, you need to find a load/powder that will take you to 12-14 shots without the groups opening up, right? You might want to try working up loads with R-15 or 4350 or something like that to see if you are able to make it to the number of rounds you typically shoot in a relay without the groups opening up.

The previous posters have given some good advice on consistent hold etc. That might help.(?)

Just for what it is worth... I had a couple GREAT shooting 243's that I had to give up on for shooting g-hog matches where the relays were 10 shots..... the barrels just would not hold that tight of a group that it takes to be competitive after I got beyond 7 shots or so. I sold one 243 last year that I had 4 second place finishes on just because it wouldn't stay with the tight groups after that many shots.

IMHO, that is why there are so many 6br's and 6ppc's in factory class. They WILL make it to the amount of rounds necessary to complete a relay and maintain tight groups and be competitive. Again, that is just my opinion, but it is based on more than just a few g-hog / varmint matches. ;)

Man, good luck to ya and hope it works out for you and let us know if you get it ironed out. I feel your pain..... trust me. :) WD

Try IMR 4350. Will run cooler and not stretch brass as much. I love IMR 4064 for 223rem and 308win, but IMR 4350 is legendary in 243win & 6mm rem. 243win & 6mm rem are overbore cartridges so slower powders may produce better groups and definitely give you better load density.

Thanx again for replie!s ! I don't have any IMR 4350, but I have H4350. Would that be a good substitute??

I think your gun likes a fouled barrel try shooting a few fouling shots before shooting for group.
