How many rounds at 1000

This will be my first 1000 yard FTR match in a long time. Trying to judge how much ammo I need for this weekend. Running out of time to get ready, just wondering if I need to load a few more.

How many rounds do you generally shoot for sighters/condition testing before you shoot for score?

I usually shoot 70-75 rounds in three 20X1000 matches. From 5-10 sighters on first string, 2-5 on second and third strings. Your target should tell you how many you need. I load at least 80 rounds for three matches.

Thanks guys. I got 200 loaded up for two days, three matches a day. I have a 300 yard zero and known velocity, so if my Shooter app is right, I have my come ups for 1000.

Sunday at ORSA is Palma day so you have unlimited sighters at 800 but only get 2 sighters each at 900 & 1000. There's 15 shots for record at each yardline so a total of 45 shots for record. I usually bring 60 for a Palma match, just to be safe.

See you there.

That's what I do, too. The most I've shot was 59 on a bad day.

Now, Now, Rick,
That's coming from the guy who doesn't compete anymore. ;) Right?
Until you made that statement I never even considered that as an option. I like the unlimited sighters mostly because it means more shooting, I'm all about the shooting so that is a good thing. However after thinking about this statement it may just have some merit.

It would mean a feller would sure have to know his rifle, that's for sure. Especially for the Cold Bore shot. It also would mean fewer cleans being shot, and would be a very good test of your initial wind reading skills. The more I think about it, i like it even more. Trouble is you would never ever get this through the Competition Committee no way no how. Hell most of the shooters would resist this with a loud voice. Not a bad idea though!!

I competed in quite a few matches....with no sighters! Leg Matches and President Hundred Matches.....and many LR events! And yes...it wouldn't ever get past the rules committee this day and age because the present generation thinks nothing but score....rather than learning the wind. Common practice is to just 'chase the spotter' and I don't know of a better way in the world to get your azz handed to you than using that method!!

broncman, Yea tell us how you liked shooting your 1st match over in Oak Ridge. You did pick a fine place to start, the folks there in Oak Ridge are some of the best. you also should have had very nice weather as well. Detail son Details.

PS Rick: I am going to start a new thread on this subject, so as not to rob this one. Go and find it as I would like to hear some of your thoughts...

Broncoman, hope you enjoyed it! I was down there as well, relay 3 on the sling side. Hope you didn't have as bad of switching winds as my relay did. And yes, brand new rifle today, couldn't not imagine shooting with out sighters lol

Limited vs unlimited sighters. There's a question. Other than overheating the barrel, what disadvantages does unlimited sighters have.

To answer the OP, I shoot 5 sighters when I have unlimited. I do that because I've noticed a tendency to string a vertical 9 out there in the first 5 (especially with my previous barrel) and I know how much heat the barrel can take. At 1000yards (warm load) and reasonable temperatures, I can shoot 25 rounds before thing start to get fishy.
