How long have you had to wait for your gunsmith?

Going on 19 months for me for 2 rifles. One is a rebarrel and bedding job. The other has cycling problems.
What is the longest you have had to wait?

Normally 24 hours for a rebarrel, I supply the barrel and usually the reamer and he calls me up the next day that I can pick it up. Not only is he fast but the guns he rebarrels shoot lights out. I know do most of my own barrel work and it, but I can not imagine waiting more than a couple months for a rebarrel.

That is ridiculous, and you should have demanded your guns back after just a few weeks. Who's screwing you like this? Sharp Shooter Supply? Whoever it is, you need to name them, so the rest of us can avoid them like the plague.

You're not doing yourself any favors by letting this outfit jerk you around. 19 months... Highrise building go up in less time!!!

Some years ago, I had a very well known benchrest smith promise to build a rifle for me in 3-4 months. I supplied all the parts. It actually took him 15 months after I kept bugging him. Later, I learned his regular customers and buddies got in line ahead of me.

I have a friend whose rifle has been at a certain shop at least FIVE YEARS. Sure, he's given up on it. Sure, he could have hounded the guy way more. But ultimately, he moved to another state and just figured one day the 'smith would call and say it was done. FIVE YEARS (or more) and counting. I've offered to go get the stuff (action, barrel, stock, trigger) on at least a dozen occasions. But my buddy says "Well, he said he's finally going to finish it... blah blah." I bet the guy hasn't even started it. If any of you want to know who, I'll PM you. Obviously my buddy doesn't really care, but I wouldn't write off a thousand bucks worth of parts (excluding the action which my friend also furnished)... Strange but true.

370bc,

I have been lucky 2 to 3 months after geting the barrel and action. 19 months is way too long. A friend of mine has been waiting stock install for near 7 months. He has called many times. He is going after it this week done or not. You can't blame the smith for waiting for barrels, actions, and stocks, but when he has everything, it's on him.

im sending out some emails to some smiths for an estimates of time & money. My smith is usually 3-4 months. I called about 9 months ago & he said he would get started on them.
One is a rebarrel of a kimber montana in 243 win. with a douglas barrel install and a bedding job. The other is a BAR that is having cycling problems.

The gunsmith that I use and get such great work in record time is on this site as Gundoktr, I would get in touch with him.

You guys that wait more than 3 or 4 months are nuts! There are many great smiths out there that do not have wait times even this long, Eric Wallace is one.

I'm busy but I quit taking jobs when I have builds booked out to 11-12 months. The good thing about that is I put it up on my site and people understand and the phone stops ringing and in no time I'm back down to 6 months and can start taking orders again. I would find a new smith before you end up in a long term relationship with the one you have now.

That is just plain unfair to the customer. As Jim said, when we start getting a backlog too long, we advise our customers. We stop taking orders, catch up, and then take orders again. The ones we have been straight up with actually have said ok, I will wait anyway. Just common consideration.

Nowhere near that long. My gunsmith (Wayne Shaw, who is on this forum) has a remarkably short turn around--I think a month or two was the longest he had a gun of mine, and that was when I wasn't in a hurry to get it back, so I didn't mind the extra time one bit. And when I've been in a hurry, he's moved heaven and earth to get it back to me in time.

Prices are good and the work's excellent; I've got four national records (prone/HP shooter) with guns he built/rebarreled and lost track of the number of regional medals.

There's no reason to deal with gunsmiths who are that slow/unreasonable. There are plenty of *darn* good ones who have a shorter backlog.

Oh, I do remember the longest I waited--it was well over a year, long enough that when the guy called, I'd pretty much forgotten about the gun. All to screw on a replacement barrel for a yugo mauser. (Yes, really. In my defense, I had no idea what I was doing...) It was the gunsmith at a local gun store.

My longest wait on a rifle was with Jim Borden, when he was part time, and that was 11 months including time out for back surgery. I mostly use Dwight Scott for BR and Varmint barrels and Tom Meredith for stocking. I have a 308 BAT build with Jon Beanland in OK right now who quoted 4-5 months with components supplied. Two years ago, Jon built a Surgeon 6.5x47 Lapua for me in 3 weeks.

Nate, I surely would like to know who the 5 year character is so that I can put him at the top of my "do not use" list.

Happy Rifle Builds to you,

waiting for gun parts from USA is up to 12 months, but waiting for my gun smith is usually no longer than 2 weeks if I bring all items needed...

no matter if it's just rebarreling or a complete build...
