How long 30 Br

i'm getting to the point to have a .30 Br made for my rem. action, it already has a 6 Br on it.. so it'll be a switch hitter 'hoping'... anyways what i'm wondering is what finished length barrel would you'all recomend, its a 17tw HB an i intend to put a muzzle break on it, i believe its 29" in its unfinished state. un chambered so far

thanks

I don't think you need more than 23 to 24 " tops. The faster powder used in a 30BR doesn't benefit much from a longer barrel. You do know that a brake isn't allowed in competition, if you ever think about shooting a match.

Muzzle brake efficiency and effectiveness are determined by three factors:

1. Capture ratio - how much propellant gas is diverted vs. that which follows the bullet
2. Muzzle pressure - the remaining propellant gas pressure at bullet exit that is available for the muzzle brake to act upon. The higher the pressure, the more work the brake can accomplish.
3. Design efficiency - how well the muzzle brake handles the gas flow

The .30 BR has problems with the first two. Caliber .30 is relatively large and the cartridge has a relatively small amount of propellant for the bore size. Thus, capture ratio and muzzle pressure are low, guaranteeing low brake performance.

The third factor, brake efficiency, is one reason they are not allowed in competition. If they are efficient, they are very loud. The pressure region shifts from the muzzle to produce large lobes beside and behind the brake. This could even be dangerous to shooters on either side.

The attached picture shows this effect. It was taken in Norway in 1987 when I was with Barrett Firearms. The muzzle brake is in the small circle and the scoured road gravel, blown by muzzle brake blast, is in the large one. Ignore the man in the strange jumpsuit, he is not relevant to this discussion. ;)
