How it's made: Your cast iron lathe base

I would love to have a mini shaper. No real reason, just something to play with. I also want to find one of those band saw "back and forth" horizontal bandsaws. I think I'll have less trouble finding and moving one of those around than a shaper of any size!
Use it like a Newtons Cradle. I watched a video of a guy shaping tools and then using an old one. Really cool piece of equipment.

I wish I had a picture of the two shapers we used to have. One was a 30 in G&L, the other a 48 inch “Ohio Dreadnought”. That’s a big shaper.

All we used the for was cutting internal key ways in large couplings.

We finally obtained a 30 inch and a 14 inch Slotter. Cutting key ways became much easier.

We just about had to pay to have the two Shapers hauled away. In fact, when we bought our 28 foot Kingston Lathe, we told them it was a done deal only if the hauled the big shaper off. They did.
Here are our two Slotters.IMG_0216.jpeg

Ever wonder how your lathe base base was made? It's made in a hole in the ground by some guys who don't have any PPE or a drop of oil for their machines.....

They skipped the part of the ways being cut.. They must grind/harden those later
Most impressive work I have seen done in a long time. I would like to know how much that cost in local currency when the video was made. I bet the new cost has skyrocketed w world wide inflation.

Oh, I bet they have a plastic jug of heavy motor oil and a paint brush. The senior man knows exactly how often to oil the machinery. The jug sits in the corner, open, no one is allowed to mess with it except the senior man.
I'm pretty sure they use "ISO 68 Turban" Oil!
