How important is an adjustable butt on an F-class rifle?

How important is an adjustable butt on an F-class rifle? I am looking at the McMillan F-class stock. Is it going to be important?
Joe

I would think it depends on the cartridge and what style of driving the rifle likes. A little recoiling cartridge that does not have to be held tight, an adjustable butt plate may not be necessary. On a larger recoiling cartridge (284 with 180 bullet) it might be a necessity. Usually the larger cartridges require a little more input from the pilot. Just make sure either way that the butt does not kick off of your collar bone.

To me it is a plus to be able to set it up for max control & comfort in F/TR & F-Open, the more you can keep any changes in your body position under control and consistent the better off you are.

Just my opinion but if I was serious about Fclass I would not order a Mcmillian fclass stock. There are much better options out there today.

Why do you say that?
I spoke with McMillan today about the issues I keep reading about with flex. They said that the flex is only because shooters order the stock with the light filler which makes it flex more. If you don't request the light fill, then it is not flexible in the forend.

All I know is at the Nationals if walk up and down the line you will see fewer Mcmillian fclass stocks than many others makes. Might be a reason :)

Don't let me discourage you from getting one you may love it. I just think there are better options out there for less money and a shorter wait time.

What other options would you advise? I have looked at Manners ($1000), Robertson (same), Russo (same as McMillan). I would love the Robertson but I am not wealthy enough. Most of the options that I find are very very expensive, but the McMillan with adj cheekpiece are $660 inletted.

Joe

Here is a awesome other option.
http://www.precisionriflesales.com/index.htm The stocks on the home page are both F/ open rifles. They also offer a awesome FTR Stock based on the same concept! Mcmillan makes a good stock but a far cry from the Ballord low boy F/open and FTR stock.
Thanks
Mark

I'm getting an PR&T F-class low boy (as featured in this gun of the week). Looks to be around $705 inletted and with the cheek piece. Mine is currently out for bedding and clearcoating (I also have the buttplate added, which does bring the price up, but that's something you can add later, whereas the cheekpiece you can't); can't wait to shoot it.

Edit: ++on deadlyswift's suggestion ;D

I was under the impression that it was almost an exact copy of the McMillan. I could definitely be wrong, but that is what I was told by a stockmaker. Anyone know for sure? I have a hard time liking most of the laminates.

LOL I hadn't paid that much attention to the McMillan because of the alleged flexing, but now that I look closer, they seem to have a very similar profile! :D

I have owned several Mcmillan f-class stocks with sniper fill and they are great stocks and i have experienced zero flexing problems on the targets shot. I do however think that the tooley mcmillan MBR stock with adjustable butt plate is a better choice. For me, I like to be a bit more upright in posture while shooting prone and the tooley MBR fits that need very very well. Lots of forearm thickness too. No worries about stock flex with this stock. I dont like them so much from the bench but if i ever do another prone rifle it will be on a Tooley MBR. Not to even mention you can buy a semi inletted stock for about 365 bucks. another 300 worth of bedding work and your good to go. The mcmillan adjustable plate will run around 200 installed. This is a nice option but like said above, if your not shooting a magnum chambering no need. I like the 6BR for work out to 600 yards and the 6BR in a 20LB rifle is a sinch to shoot. Good luck with your adventure. let us all know how you make out. Look at the tooley Mcmillan MBR or even try to get your hands on one before you spend any money. I think you will see were i am coming from. Lee

Skeetlee, where can I get that kind of price on the MBR? I appreciate your input guys. I don't have any good place to try these stocks so I am just going off of what I think will work well.

Joe

Brunos sells the MBR stocks. I dont remember what the stocks weighed with the heavy fill, but i do remember that i didnt have any trouble keeping the rifle with in the legal weight limit Good Luck! Lee

Be careful with the MBR if you use a big cal (7wsm or such like)
I had to change because the stock damn near jumped out of the front rest with torque!
It is perfect for a 6mm or 6.5 but a 7 or .30 forget it, I have one with .22ppc at max weight for 300 yrd comps, it doesn't move and shoots 80 Gr vld's like a laser.
I have a Mcmillian f class on 7mm and the jury is out, the stock does flex.
+ 1 on the Precision rifle and tool, superb.
shehane Lee six thumbhole is also super stable, my 7 Saum is set into this and I like it very much.

If you want a 7 go low and long with the action directly in line with the cheek to track straight.

Just my opinion after spending hard earned cash and being disappointed.

Gary
