Bolt Gun Bodacious
... changed over time?

Initially (10-30 years ago) I focused on 223 / 6.5CM and 338 NormaMag.

In the last 10 years, my focus has been 22rf / 224 Valkyrie and now looking to ditch 6.5 CM for a 6mm something.

I think I ditched 338 cuz its was just excessive recoil...maybe I'm wussing out a bit.

I've added a number of 9mm carbines. Super fun range toys, mostly. Tho pricey w/ the 2 x $200 permission slip (with suppressor.)
22rf came up as there are numerous local comps. Mostly BR / F-class / ARA / IR5050 stuff.

224V (bolt gun) and 6mm came about as I learned more about performance at distance.

And I got more interested in long range accuracy.

What bout you?

About ten years ago I got back into shooting after a long hiatus. Initially I was interested in accurate .22 rim fires but I was limited because I wasn’t interested in chasing ammo. I happened picked up a Remington 700 VLS chambered in .243 Win with plans to use it as a combination deer and varmint hunting rifle. It wasn’t long before the accuracy bug bit and I was getting into reloading. Today I shoot and reload .223, 6BRA, .243 Win, 6.5-284, and 30-06. I don’t bother reloading for my old 30-30 or any of my handguns. It’s definitely 6mm that gets most of my attention since I own two BRAs and three 243s.

Funny how things change. Just started getting back into pistol shooting after about 20 yrs. Knocked the dust off about a dozen stored in the safe and found all kinds of pistol stuff in the garage (reloading room) For some reason I got the bug about my old Remmy ’06 hunting rifle, (lots of good stories their!) Restocked it, new barrel, muzzle break bla..bla..bla. Gave up on the “BIG” stuff now for competition it’s all 6mm

Before I knew any better I used to be one of the fanboys for the .260 Rem/6.5 craze; thought the .308 was an outdated POS. I also loved the big hotrod 30 mags. Then I started shooting F-Class, and my entire world view changed.

So far as I'm concerned, there is no more enjoyable combo to load and shoot than a .308/200.20x. It's just silly how well that combination absolutely hammers, especially with a new barrel.

I also enjoy the little 6mms too. I'd like to build a straight 284 whenever components make a comeback.

There really is something to be said for cartridges/reamer/bullet combos that have been proven in competition. No guess work, no sifting through book load data, it's all known, and it almost always hammers.

Lol!
Well, the older I get, the smaller my hunting cartridges have gotten, but a muzzle brake changed that back somewhat several years ago. Back to a moderate 280 AI. It gets the job done nicely for anything that doesn't hunt me.!

My competition rifles have been all over the place over the years, cartridge wise. Since I shoot short range by far more than anything else, I'll stick with those cartridges here.
Started, like many of us, with a good shooting varmint rifle. It was a m70 heavy varminter chambered in...22-250! Yep..it was hard on barrels but it shot great. It was my first and only true 1/4 moa factory rifle.
It was good enough to set the hook deep!

Again like many, I went with a few 6br's and 6ppc's for a while, then got into registered matches shooting IBS VFS. Started with a good shooting Stolle Teddy in 6BR but it didn't take long to realize I needed a 30BR in that game. Did so and had some pretty good luck with it, winning a few matches in a tough crowd before getting the itch to try my new wildcat 30 Major(30 Grendel) cartridge. That thing shot great! I wore out a bunch of barrels on it(that's saying something)before UBR came along...a caliber neutral benchest for score game. The hook has never been deeper!

I shot the first few years with my 30 Major with some success but had the wildcat itch again soon. Since there is no scoring advantage to the bigger bullet of a 30 in UBR, I soon gravitated to a 220 Beggs. Boy, that thing is fun! No recoil and shoots like a lazer! Again, had some success with it, winning several matches and tying a world record only to see a new record shot at the same match by a good friend and gunsmith by the name of Mike Niblett. Now this guy was a shooter. One of the best I've ever personally known. Sadly, Mike has passed on.

Still got the wildcat bug. I guess the only cure is another wildcat! So, been playing with a 6 Grendel for the last few years. Wonderful cartridge! It just makes a lot of sense, really. I've been pretty lucky with this little round too, winning a UBR National championship with one in 2019 and I was first loser to yet another world record holder last year! I will say this...I absolutely love this stuff and UBR is a great game with some of the best people anywhere!!

I still shoot my 30 Major some, even in caliber neutral UBR matches. I still think it's the most accurate cartridge I've ever been around..but it's a 30 and is harder to tame consistently vs the 6's. I plan to shoot it in the upcoming UBR Nats in one class and the 6 Grendel in unlimited. Heck, I plan on shooting a 6BR in Modified at the same match, too. That gun shoots pretty dang well and has a story to tell of its own.

Enjoyed the post and the reminiscing. Keep em coming and shoot small!--M

When I was younger I wanted the biggest, baddest caliber that I could carry into the woods and back. I didn’t care about recoil or if I could move my arm/shoulder for a week after shooting it. After I hit 60, I have found that I want the lightest recoiling caliber that will do the job.

Started out shooting the High Powered rifle matches with a 308 Win. Then stepped up to the 300 WM. That was back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Still have the rifles, but they have not seen the light of day for a very long time. Now it has been 6mm and 6.5 for this guy. Cant even think to list all the calibers i have in both diameters. Sorry 30 Cal guys, but its the death of the .308. Not saying its a bad caliber, but science would prove me wrong!
