How does Sauer do it?

The video in the following daily bulletin (Dec 10, 2009) left me wondering how Sauer does it, would like my Savage 12 action to work like that.

First I would suggest spending hours and hours practicing that kind of shooting after which you will probably not choose a Savage 12P. German Salazar has a vid somewhere of him shooting a tube gun pretty much like that and even has advice on how he sets up his gun.

Which factory action would you choose (other than Sauer STR)?

Like John said the Eliseo R5 tube gun is great. It is based on the Remington short action. I'm building one at present, but it'll take awhile as I'm also building my prone gun as well, and it takes priorty right now.

It is all about practice and technique which will be unique to you and your gun. Any action can be slicked up a bit to cycle smoothly. I had a Tikka that was great out of the box, took me quite a while to get the technique (practice) down for the rapid stages of High Power. Minimum of body movement, cool head, consistent sight alignment (natural point of aim is critical) is what it is all about. Stock choice is personal, tube or conventional really does not matter as much as training.

It takes a great deal of practice to develop a good technique. In NRA Highpower, the rapid fire stages don't require firing anywhere near as fast as those Norwegian competitions. One thing that's hard to see in that particular video but is clear in some others, is that the middle finger is used on the trigger. That leaves the index finger much closer to the bolt handle and allows for faster bolt manipulation.

Every form of competitive shooting causes specialized techniques to develop and while they are useful for that discipline, they often aren't too useful for much else!

Fastest firing bolt-action? Probably the Lee-Enfield, the bolt almost shoots open, cocks on closing. Not too handy for us lefty shooters though...

I have seen other videos from Europe ..did you notice that he is n ot using the trigger finger to fire rifle? I have seen this technique before shooter uses middle finger. I think that is a better use for it anyway; than the usual.

The style of shooting in the video is certainly fascinating. As mentionned above, every discipline has its own technique. My original question may not have been very clear but it intended to focus on what is different about the action itself that sets it apart from rifles designed for other disciplines (high power, F class, BR, etc). It would be hard to believe that shooting 15 shots in 17 seconds (or vice-versa?) accurately is just a question of technique; that it could be done just as well with any Rem 700 if you practice enough.
Is there anything special that a gunsmith would do to prepare a 700 specifically for that type of competition?

I have a Sauer Target rifle chambered in 6.5.x55. The bolt on the Sauer is smoother than any factory bolt. The bolt has 6 locking lugs that lock straight into the barrel(headspace always the same). I have shoot sub 1/4 moa groups at 100 m. I can change barrels in about five minutes and there are many calibers available. The problem with this rifle is the price of it and the extra barrel is very expensive but it comes completely ready. Check out the website: sauer.de english in the right corner.

I checked out the manual at the Sauer website and got a look at the bolt head that locks into the barrel. So thats the secret!
The cocking ramp seems to be very shallow too. Going to ask my local dealer how much a 200 STR would cost here in Canada.

Thats right.
The Sauer rifles are very popular in europe because they have a very smooth factory bolt because its completly round and not steped at the recoil lugs like Rem or Savage.
But the main secret is: the Scandinavian use big bolt knobs and train a lot !!! With training you can do the same with a rem or savage too.
The 6,5x55 STR`s have hammer forged barrels and used up to 10.000 rounds. The accuracy is excellent and the trajectory is much better than a 308 Win.

Disadvantage of the Sauer rifles is the high price and there are no after market parts available.
The factory barrels costs as much as a rem or savage rife...

Here a pic from my custom S202 with custom stainless barrel in 8,5x63, IOR 3-18x42, 350gramm trigger.
Accuracy is about 1/2 MOA at the moment with AERO 168grain Bullets and Vitha N140.
