How do you use your Magnetospeed?

Hmmm??? The only way I'd have any confidence in the results is if test is repeated and the results are the same. :)

"nodes. I usually perform this test twice. Scenario: L"

I do it twice to find a focus area for an OCW and seating test. If you have a better way, please share!:)

Oh . . . I did read the OP yesterday and that slipped my mind when I saw the graph today with just the one set of numbers. It seems at my age I more easily get distracted. ;)

I've not actually tested that method myself. I simply look for low ES's in my chrono numbers along with low ES's on paper at distance for my load development.

Where velocity stabilizes across 3, 4, or 5 load increments.

I made a quick chart because a picture is worth a thousand...

I understand you are averaging and plotting 3 shots. There are no flats spots it’s just an error from plotting a small amount of data. If each of your data points showed error bars it would look completely different. You need to see the scatter and not an average. Doesn’t make sense that you put in more powder and the FPS doesn’t change. Three shots doesn’t show the true ES. If you plotted each shot for 10 shots at each load I am sure you wouldn’t see flat spots.

The Magnetospeed is very useful if you shoot airguns or rimfire suppressed. By adding a couple of neodymium magnets to the bayonet and putting the sensitivity setting to HI 2, it easily will pick up all your shots for whatever your purpose is. Pics attached of my airgun setup.

They increase the field strength of the existing magnets in the bayonet. It can then more readily detect smaller projectiles or projectiles with minimal conductive material.

How do we measure performance in this sport, by ES, SD or by where the bullets hit the target? Velocity nodes, extreme spread and standard deviation are all interesting and may be useful stats, but ultimately neither matters. If the load makes small groups where you want them, then who cares if the ES or SD are in double digits and if it doesn't, well again, what does it matter?

I used to think like that, let the rifle tell you what it likes. I still do for the most part. I don't "chase" SD and ES, especially during the load development.

Then I started shooting long. Loads with ES of 20 or more just don't seem to work for me at 1200+ yards. It's tough enough to dope a wind call, spin drift, and Coriolis. Having a close ES makes for one less variable - and a low SD inspires confidence. Having that information close to the match is very beneficial.

Knowing my stable (or insensitive) velocities allows me to load for an upcoming event and more closely match the conditions. For example if my load was developed in April at 40 degrees and I have a match in September at 95 degrees I can load at the lower end of the insensitive zone. If the conditions are cooler or there is a possibility of high moisture (lower altitude-density) then I can load at the higher end of the insensitive zone.

I will be the first to admit that none of this really seems to matter at 100-500 yards - but it does make a difference past 1000.

Back to the MagnetoSpeed - It is really convenient to carry and use in the beginning and end steps of the process if using velocity as a load parameter.

I use a magnetospeed to check my S.D. and ES while with the same shots checking to see how my groups are looking.

Are you guys saying I can’t do both at the same time?

I really like the magnetospeed as I can test velocities real quick on something I want to check out without having to wait for a cease-fire - which can be an otherwise long wait to retrieve my equipment. I use the magnetospeed during all my load development and even though it tends to affect group size and/or placement somewhat - it doesn't tend to make bad loads look better than good and vice-versa. I now leave it on during the entire course of load work-up till I'm down to comparing my best groups within the velocity range I want to be in with the best SD's, etc. I've done it with and without many times and settled with leaving it on.

Ok guy's here's a load work up shot by a friend who uses a lab radar.
The point I'm going to make is you cant trust what the chronograph report is, but what the target tell you.
Look at 30.5 & 30.6.
You would think 30.6 should have went into 1 hole or been the smallest group. image000000.jpgnow for the target image000001.jpgyou be the judge!
