How do you indicate a Savage to the threads for truing?

I really think the whole "floating bolt head" thing borders on being a myth. Two Savages I have in the shop have bolt heads which fit so tightly in the bolt bodies that there is no float whatsoever. Regarding the barrel nut: the nut just provides another opportunity to produce a thread with a poor fit or a mating surface with partial contact. The real lesson to be learned is that maybe things just don't matter as much as we like to think. WH

I have similar feelings as well. I have the tools the true the receiver to the bolt raceway but no way to square the face of a factory barrel nut, which all of my rifles still use, and I can not see it’s effect on the accuracy of these rifles.

If you have a part in your lathe to indicate the threads to simply set your feed to the proper tpi engage your half nuts and lay your indicator stylus in the v of the thread. Rotate chuck by hand.

Not to cause any friction here but
I’ve re-cut threads true to the bolt raceway using PTG piloted tools on several receivers without any issues using pre-fit barrels. I square the face and also the lug abutments with the same tool then chase the threads with a tool dedicated for that. After that I lap the lugs and then square the bolt face. No issues with any so far and they’re all very decent shooting rifles.

I use them as well. Mandrel cleans up the threads perpendicular to the raceway. Yeah, makes the thread fit a bit sloppier, but this does not affect accuracy. As long as the receiver face is trued and the barrel shoulder is clean and true the desired alignment will be achieved.

Correct. They’re the tools that PTG sells to pilot off of the raceway, not a lathe where I have the option to create my own mandrel/tooling to do what I understand is the relatively simple process you’re alluding to. All hand tools here to use at normal work bench. Similar to this:

Understand then I don't see an option, you need a lathe to play with

I use a mandrel to true the nut face to the threads- but absent the lathe just buy anyone's aftermarket "precision" nut. I wouldn't go through the process only to put the original factory nut back on. Might be ok, might not...
