How do you clean your cases?

I don't know if I should buy a tumbler or try the IOSSO case cleaner kit? I am looking for opinions. Should I buy a tumbler to clean my cases and if so which one? Should I use IOSSO case cleaner, how well does it work? Please help.
Bob

Some necks are turned and some are not. Different guns and calibers. I didn't think or realize it made a difference.

iosso gets the cases real clean. tumbling gets them shiny but leaves dust on and in the brass. so they need to be washed any way. right now i just wash the cases but i may in the future try an ultra-sonic unit.my $.02________treeman

Bob,

I use a Lyman Turbo Tumbler and Vibrashine treated corncob media. ALL MEDIA IS NOT THE SAME! Some are definately dustier than others, thats why I use the Vibrashine media.
Also corncob I feel is better than walnut shell simply because the oil in walnut shells just adds another "What if?" factor.
I don't doubt all the claims of the ultrasonic camp, it's just that I'm too lazy to fool with all that stuff, and I don't feel any added benefits are worth the bother to me. Just my opinion, to each his own. I throw my cases in the tumbler and come back the next day and they're done. Lot less hassle for me.

Hey Joisey... Que' paso?

Danny.

There was a thread somewhere that I read recently that said if you put a sheet of the static paper that is used in laundry dryers, they pull the dust out of the media,I use corn cob).

Another guy said that he puts an old washcloth in and it collects the fine dust. Then he washes it every so often.

I'm gonna try both the next time I do a bunch of cases, because it is the dust level that causes me to toss a bunch of corn cob.

My ultra sonic don't make much dust while it's doing that great job of cleaning my cases squeaky clean inside and out :)

Ultrasonics can remove ash, but won't get the oxidation and dark brown color off of the cases.

The cleanest cases come from vibratory polishers...
... and everyone knows that pretty cases shoot more accurately than yucky cases.

While my US cleaner might not make the cases as shiny - I also don't spend any time picking media out of flash holes. The US cleaner might be a little more hands on work, but the fact that the insides of the case come out free of any soot/ residue is my main reason for US cleaning.

I use a berry MFG tumbler with walnut shells and a table spoon of brasso polish mixed into the shell it does a good job and keeps the dust off the shells

Way back I asked what you were tumbling and if the necks were turned. BR shooters don't, as a rule, tumble their cases. We feel there is a risk of damaging the necks and it's just as easy to clean them as we use them. I clean the necks on the inside first with a worn bronze brush of the same caliber then I wipe the outside of the neck with a mixture of Kroil, shooter's Choice, and Sweet's. We also run a primer pocket tool in the primer pocket just enough to clean the crud out. You don't want to get back to shiny brass in the pocket.
We use IOSSO liquid case cleaner after turning necks to get the oil or any lube out of the inside of the case. I believe the instructions are on the IOSSO can.

I don't tumble rifle brass unless it's very old and dirty.

I've used the Iosso case cleaner which is a mild acidic that will brighten up your cases. Lyman case cleaner works even better and faster, but nothing will get the inside of your cases clean like ultra-sound.

Personally for BR cases I just wipe the outside with some Ballistol on a patch. This simultaneously cleans and lubricates the case for sizing. Ballistol will take off all but real hardened carbon. Ballistol is non-toxic, very slippery, and is easily removed with a paper towel. All you need is a super-thin sheen when you size cases.

I do tumble pistol brass but thats because the outside gets quite sooty with some loads.

I use Iosso and US. Place a 1 quart jar, filled about 3/4 with straight Iosso in US and run for about 20 minutes. Works really good inside and out. I put the cases in a mesh bag, recycled bag from onions). Makes it easier to remove all the cases at once and just hang over the jar for 10 minutes or so to drain. Wash thoroughly and dry. I put them in a paper towel lined box for a couple days. If I'm in a hurry I blow dry with a compressor. Brass is completely clean, inside and out and primer pocket. It is NOT shiney like tumbling which I almost never do anymore. Hanic

First, thanks for all the replies, very helpful..... Another question.... I am trying the IOSSO case cleaner. After using it according to the directions I still have burnt powder around the outside of the necks. Anyone else experiencing this? How do you clean it up? Do you wipe it off with something like never dull or what? Thanks again, Bob

It has been my experence that the black stuff on the outside of the neck is pretty soft - I wipe the necks when they come out of the case cleaner.

Now why didn't I know that it wouldn't be as easy as soak em and rinse em  Thanks again.

The black stuff is mostly ash, with some other compounds holding together.

You can dissolve,or soften) the stuff that holds it there, but nothing can disolve the ash.

So when it gets soft, just wipe it off. If I'm not in a hurry, I will use a soft brush and clean out the insides of the necks... but usually I'm doing a large bunch of cases.

When I do a bunch, I take them out of the cleaner, and put them in a plastic sink with laundry "Tide" and slosh them around with some cloths, and that usually does it.

Just a caution. Be safe !!

Never use any Ammonia containing products on your Brass.

Ammonia in solution with water attacks Brass at the Molecular level.

The cases can fail catastrophically.

Do a search on Ammonia's effect on Copper based alloys.
