How Do You Attach Bolt Handles

Bully

Silver $$ Contributor
It looks like I may need to move my bolt handle. How do you guys re-attach yours?

Silver solder/braze from Brownell's seems the "easiest" but I do have access to a TIG as well, although my skills are a wee tad rusty. Let me know what you do and what is the best for a beginner.

Thanks in advance.

Honestly , send it off . You've done great , but this is one area that takes a lot of practice . Messing it up can require a new bolt . The cam surface doesn't like a lot of heat

I agree with Ggmac- send it out. A number of guys on here can do this but I don’t know how many want to if that’s the only thing they are doing on the gun. I don’t want to step on any bodies toes —Dans 40x will do a great job for you. I think Alex Wheeler had a video out there on doing this if you’d like to check it out.

Thanks for the advice.

Dan (@Dans40X ) I know you're awesome but I'm trying to learn all this on my own. No offense if I don't send it your way.

Bully , I knew you meant to do it diy. What’s the point of buying a lathe and learning to chamber your own if you’re not a diy learner to the core ? You certainly could save a bundle of cash and plenty of heartaches paying professionals to do the work but what’s the fun in that ? I like your style !

A guy catches a lot of grief around here for it, that's for certain.

I really enjoyed his chambering thread. If this thread goes anywhere nearly as well, that will be fantastic.
I have nothing but best wishes for the man.

One of the biggest problems I see is the extraction cam angle on the bolt hanlde not being the same as cam angle on the receiver.

What is the largest variable with any Rem action/bolt/handle?

(not 1 single You Tube Video Producer has noticed or mentioned it to date)

Some even phuck up the receiver since they haven't a CLUE !
(aka J.Hankins)
I would love to hear your thoughts on it. This is a massive learning experience for me. The more I can hear, the better I learn.
I had the opportunity to work with a pro 'smith for a weekend. It was like drinking from a firehose. Too much information and not enough time. That's why I keep coming back here. To remind myself of what I learned that weekend.

I like your analogy. The correct information at the correct time is what a guy needs. Too much too early about intricacies you're not ready for is more harmful than helpful, at least that's been my experience.

Does your 5 aspects deal with a sloppy sako extractor ? Maybe you could list what you think - the 5 are ?

greisdor-
Think about your question in reference to your sloppy SAKO extractor modification-
How is the longitudinal & radial placement of a bolt handle going to fix someone's bastardized machine work ?
If your SAKO extractor install has a through hole that penetrated the inner bolt body tube diameter for the pivot instead of a counterbore(square bottom hole)you have a dangerous modification to your bolt.

The largest variable in any Remington bolt is the length of the bolt body "TUBE" prior to Rem pinning & induction silver brazing the head to the body & then induction silver brazing the bolt handle flush w/ the aft end of the body tube.
Rem bolt heads have 3 options that are marked accordingly of which all 3 heads fall w/in SAAMI specs for head space.

There are 2 receiver serial number pre-fix lettered receivers that have issues at the rear receiver ring/bolt handle cut.
Take notes, after you've worked 10,000 + handles as I have since the late 70's you will have a better knowledge to work your magic or molestation.

If your 'plumber requires your receiver & assumes any bolt handle marked for a Remington is a direct replacement to properly locate/time a bolt handle-SEEK A PROFESSIONAL.

I prefer soldering, probably because I have screwed up a few and it's a lot easier to unsolder than to un-tig.

Changing a bolt handle under the assumption that the handle was machined properly w/o visually inspecting the rotational TIMING & then to fixture the bolt handle into battery is elementary 'plumbing work.

Pulling carbon from the bolt body while removing or silver brazing a bolt handle is pulling temper from the parts that CAN NOT be re-heat treated unless case hardened/QPQ'd/PVD'd.
(of which your brazed handle is going to fall off during the process)

LOL,,,"MAGIC or MOLESTATION",,,I have to write that one down

"Say What'cha REALLY Feel Danny Boy! LOL"

Yup, this Dans40X dude is a complete prick, an A'Hole of the first order........which is PRECISELY why I'd have him do the job.

In my half-century of dealing with folks of all stripes, from "redneck meckanick" to "perfessional grade" to friggin' "certified out thee ever-livin' ass" I've learned to live by one single LAW when picking guys to do my work....... the dude doing the work must be busy and most importantly he MUST be a prick. If normal people don't hate the guy, I don't even want to waste his time.

I don't ever want no "nice guy" working on my stuff.

AND.... to make matters even better....... every "asshole" I've ever worked with turned out to be the best and nicest guy once I've earned his respect.

EARNED..... his respect.

Bully, like you I've spent my life (am spending my life) learning how to do stuff..... I can build buildings and fix cars and survive in the woods and am generally undaunted by any sort of task BUT, to bastardize Dirty Harry Callahan in 'Cool Hand Luke'...... "A Man's Got To Know His Limitations"

I own MIGs, and TIGs and induction welders in addition to stick and gas. And I've silver brazed, copper brazed, lead soldered, tin soldered.....put on ribs and sights and put double-barrels back together. I've remodificated Mousers and Carcanos and Kraigs.....even went to some pay-yer-way gunsmithing school for two years of my early life (top of the class until they kicked me out) so I've got jigs and sinks here for bending and welding and stretching and boring and threading bolt handles....

But there are some places I'll never go.

I'll never make my own center-fire barrel blank.
I'll never make an action
I'll never tug on Superman's cape and.....

I'll never TIG my own bolt hannle LOL!!

WHY NOT???

I'm glad you asked...... because I think bolt handle/trigger timing is vitally important to accuracy.

Jim Borden's good at it.
Greg Walley's good at it.
Dan Armstrong's good at it, AND.... when he's got it timed he friggin' WELDS IT DOWN!! (kewl)

And there are 3 others who come to mind....

I don't mean to make a "safety issue" out of this cuz IT AIN'T..... but IMO learning to do ACCURACY well in the next 50yrs of my life is enough of a challenge that making my own barrel blanks ain't in it. Nor is making my own action, bolt, trigger nor firing mechanism, and when I have a guy at my disposal like Dan who's done enough of these bolt handle installs that he's well and truly THROUGH the obligatory learning curve (my record is...."I can always get it right, by the 3rd or 5th try" ;) ) then I'll spend my money there and my time elsewhere....

So, me, puttin' in a plug for Dans40X 'tude and all.....(actually, mainly supporting the attitude itself cuz I love it when guys get good enough) ..... and also saying I wouldn't do it but.... "If you choose to TIG your own handle on, "Best Of Luck!""

and swd had a good idea...
