How do we feel about Ugly reloading comparators?

I love mine. Actually thinking of getting a 2nd set just to be able to measure bearing surface. (Pro tip: buy a gauge pin for proper alignment between jaws).
The readings are a thou or two different than my Hornady comparators, but as long as you're using the same comparator it doesn't matter what the reading is.

IDK. Only difference I see between their offerings and the brand they're bashing is the inserts and body are threaded instead of a slip fit.

Solution in search of a problem, IMO.

I have a set of the 'bashed' design already. Don't need 2 to confuse things.

Some guys don't seem to get it. They are comparators, used with a dial caliper and they're expecting accuracy to .0.0005" or better.

Ain't gonna happen.

You want that, you'll need Datum gauges that include a micrometer.

And for what?

Datum gauges may or may not exist. If they do, I expect the cost is astronomical just to measure cases.

All you are doing is establishing a reference point on a case datum or a point on a bullet ogive, as long as you are using the same tool all the time, and the same die with the same seater plug, you'll have the same results, and will be varying anything you set in the die from that point, be it an in or out adjustment. Are the holes in a Derraco more exact than a Hornady or Forster or Area 419 or whatever other brand? Maybe, maybe not, caliper isn't good enough to tell the difference with anyway. Could just be the difference in the way they break the edges or the actual drill size is a plus vs a minus. I'd likely trust Derraco over Hornady to have it right, but, either will suffice for establishing that reference point to work from.

I have a set of the Derraco, same thing. They work fine. having said that, I may sell them to recoup some space.

Because for bullets I have and like the sinclair hex bullet comparator. For headspace one can use the gun's own chamber - just take the ejectors out of the bolt and size until it runs freely, then leave it or add .001 or so to taste. Or a https://www.larrywillis.com/instructions2.html ; or a
Wilson Case Gage (which I already have). Or a .45ACP shell casing.

The two thumbscrews are a great idea. I hate digging for that tiny allen wrench that fits my Hornady set.
It's not shown in the Amazon ad, but the piece that attaches to your caliper also includes a set screw in case you want to mount it semi-permanently. I use the brass thumbscrews, and put a dab of Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket onto the threads to keep them from backing out and running away.

We feel good about the Derraco set. I use mine and like it.

There is a video on their web site comparing the Hornady unit to their's

Me too.. I took a pistol magnet, you know the kind that people mount to their desk or nightstand, and put it on the back of my press. I just slap all those pesky, tiny allen wrenches to that magnet so I don't have to dig them out of a drawer or wonder where they went. Thought that might be a helpful idea.

Great idea!

I ordered some M3 x 10 brass thumb screws from Amazon and put them on my Derraco set. Had to turn the head diameter down and re-knurl to fit the two side by side, but otherwise an easy swap.

As long as the hole is round, it makes no difference.
As you stated, it's merely a reference point.
