How do I hold a stock for milling

I have a B&C varmint stock with a aluminum action block that I need to mill for a different action.

How do you guys hold these type of stocks with no flat surfaces that aren't tapered?

Do you have a jig or fixture?

Thanks
Hal

If you don't want to build a jig or fixture. Get some Delrin rod and turn it into 6 small pins two of each diameter. Turn the diameters to take out the taper and curvature so you can use your vise. But remember, you can't apply a lot of clamping force so you need to take very light cuts.

I have a tall set of aluminum jaws for my vise and I use 2-3 layers of thick leather and some smaller scraps to fill in the wider gaps. It holds a stock pretty securely.

You could use some wide masking tape on the stock and some on the jaws and get away with just snugging it up a bit. That mill bit will go through the alum. like butter........Take small bites.

I typically use wood blocks with leather padding on them. Set the middle in the vice snugged up and blocks under the forearm and butt stock and use hold down parts to snug it down to the table.

A Kurt vise.....
Never had a problem even with stocks that don't have flat spots. Never had to make any special jig, never used soft jaws in Kurt either, only when putting in bench vise.

I use my Kurt vise with tapered wood shim stock to take care of the angles. Everything that gets clamped is wrapped to protect it. Machinist jacks under the butt or forearm support when needed.

OP-
If you need to ask how to hold/fixture a stock for inlet/milling-

May I suggest-

Seek a professional & not a hobbyist!

I like leather.............

Would you guys that have universal jigs to hold stocks,
care to post your designs?
Might help others along the way.....

I am looking for a jig to hold stocks, of all shapes and sizes,
when using a router for removing 95% of the excess.

Tia,
Don

I clamp with leather and put little jack stands under each end. Ive seen people take wood and make 2 l shaped pieces and use bondo to mold the stock in. Only works on marbled or smooth stocks i wouldnt do it on a stock like the op is doing

I clamp in the mill vise between two pieces of 1/2" conveyor belting and support the fore end and toe of the butt with machinist jacks or parallels. There is little tendency for the stock to move if you use sharp tooling, high rpm and take light cuts.

Hey Guys,

I remember a post, I think? about a jig that held the stock blank,
and then used a router to hog out 95%+ of the excess wood,
on a pistol stock blank.

I just can't remember where I found the info,
Any clues?? Someone here??

I got a slab of laminate 2-1/2" thick (Blue/Blk color combo),
with enough material to do 2 rear grip stocks,
one for the 284 & 280 AI SP pistols.

I found out a Dremel tool, even with the most aggressive bits,
is not going to cut it, on that hard laminate.

If I had my mill, it would no be a problem,
smoked the main bearings I think??

Trying to find a good place to rebuild the head, as it was tired,
when I got it, it had been rode hard, and put away wet,
as the saying goes.
