How do I get started

There are two types of benchrest classifications I guess.I would like too get started in one of these just don't know who to contact.I have all the stuff required to get started i think gun, rests, good hand loads, great personality,is there anything else I need. Been winning a lot of club shoots time to move on any help would be a great help..

Mason, there are more than 2 classes of BR. Are you thinking 100-200yd group, score? 100-300-500varmint matches? 600yd group, 1000yd. True benchrest,F class, hunter class etc. A littel more info and we will get you started.

The 6ppc is dominate with the 30br on its heals. You dont NEED the best equipment but it does help. Get the best equipment your budget permits. Know your gun, and learn to read the wind. A good mental attitude is a must. Practice. Where are you from? There are br matches most places in the us.

Find where there are some matches close by and make it a point to attend. You will learn more as a spectator at 1 match than you could learn in months online. As Lynn pointed out, picking the right time to poke around is important, but most all the shooters are willing to lend a helping hand to a new shooter.

I'm from central ill.Just started 2 years ago and alot of people say I have lots of potential and I should take place in some of the bigger matches to see were I stand. So here goes I hope I dont make a fool of myself.

Find and go to a registered BR match. Don't be afraid to ask questions of the other shooters. Most will be more than willing to help you out. DO NOT worry about making a fool of yourself. Every shooter at the match has already done that, to his or herself, at least once and will probably do it again.

I just started competing in BR last year but I do have nearly 30 yrs of WIDELY:) varied motorsports involvement. I have learned to set modest goals. My goal at the first match was not to crossfire :) I did expect to finish last and I met that expectation. I did have some very positive things that I took from that first match and that is all you should look for.

By the end of the year my goals were much higher but still modest. It was a score match and I wanted to shoot my first 250 at 200, my first 500 and my first 5x with my Viper [ I shot a 5x in my first score match shooting my SP Savage :)]. I did shot a 250 at 200 and tied for the win but struggled a little at 100 and had a bad cartridge that cost me my 250 at 100. 3rd overall.

My goal for the next score match is to shoot a 500 and a 5x, same goals I didn't meet at the last match. Winning is never a goal I set because I choose to compete against people with high skill and experience levels. I want to shoot as good as I can and if that is good enough to win then great, if I get beat that is fine too because I am not cherry picking. Being in contention for a top 3 placing is something anybody can be proud of in the group I shoot with.

The main thing I try to accomplish at a match is not get caught up in the excitement when shooting really well. Maintaining complete calm and focus is a key to doing your best. Not caring where I finish is one of the ways I stay calm, focused and methodical.

Hey folks. I too am a newby with an itchy TF who whould like to compete before the ravages of old age destroy my eysight and an steady hand. Have just purchased a 700VLS in 243. Would like to compete in hunter class, but would like to have the option to comptete in Light Varmint. I also understand there is an ummodified, stock class that is a possibility. As you can tell, I am wondering where to start. I have purchased a Jewel 1.5 oz-4LB trigger, as yet uninstalled. Would appreciate any feedback on stocking, rebarreling,Is a Sendero configured barrel at 26 inches appropriate for competing in both hunter class and Light Varmint?)

Someone suggested Pac-Nor and a good rebarreler.

Any feedback is welcome

Thanks
