There's a half dozen or more 6br variants, how come there isn't 30 BR variants?
Prolly there should be a 30BR Variants section on the main page, like there is with the 6s.There's a half dozen or more 6br variants, how come there isn't 30 BR variants?
30BR, N120. Have been playing with it some and so far so good.Stan Ware and I did several 30BRX's. Our thinking was since H4198 is borderline 'slow' for the 30BR with 112-125's, the extra capacity of the BRX (.100 more body length) might give enough extra case capacity to better balance the powder burn rate to the capacity. They shot just like a good 30BR and velocity was up about 125 fps. Charge weights of H4198 were in the mid-high 36 gr. range.
Dies are stupid-simple. The BRX reamer run into a Wilson seater die and a standard Redding Type S or Harrel's #3 worked great. For the lower .100 of the case, we used a Redding BR Body Die (with the upper portion opened up) as a 'ring' die for the base.
If you go down the BRX road, resist the temptation to run the 30BR reamer in .100 longer...for the obvious reasons. Get a dedicated BRX reamer. We just spec'd the front end of the BRX reamer exactly the same as a BR case but .100 further ahead than the standard 30BR. That actually helped out the sizing on the front end a bit, too.
In the end, the BRX did what it was supposed to do. We both went back to the plain vanilla 30BR's later on in the LV/HV guns...and then to the 30 WolfPup in the HBR class guns.

Greg, I still have some of my blended H4227/H4198. I called it H4212.530BR, N120. Have been playing with it some and so far so good.
How well do those blend? All the 4227 I've seen is much finer than any 4198 I've seen. I'd worry they'd settle out differently and potentially cause problems...but I like the idea of speeding the 4198 up some. N120 is fasterHreg, I still have some of my blended H4227/H4198. I called it H4212.5. Haha.
Mike, seperating never seemed to be a problem. I started 'speeding up' H4198 with the H4227 and ended up 'slowing down' the H4227 with the H4198...if you know what I mean. How well do those blend? I would urge people looking for a 'bigger 30BR' to heed Randy's advice. The 30X44-47's are so good as to be virtual big brothers to the 30BR..both in precision and tuning. Given case forming issues and dies, the 30X47 Lapua is the only way to go, in my opinion. These 'big' (by BR case standards) .30's are just that good.Strongly opinionated: if you're going to, "go bigger", GO BIGGER! Since you'll have to mess around finding/getting proper sizing dies made, it's way better to got up to 30x44/30x47 capacity, and open a Pandora's box of suitable/useful powders.
The 30x47 HBR types generally hold about 47.5 -48 gr. of H20, the 44's about two grains less, and are, even at these capacites, extremely efficient. As to precision, they deliver all one can use - even in my gezerly state, my last 30x47 HBR - NBRSA Registered 100 Yd. Hunter Rifle score (10Lb/6x scope limits) was 250-20X. Recoil is not significantly increased, but is greater in duration, as there is considerably more gas to vent.
The contemporary flock of cartridges offers one standout possibility, which has been exploited quite successfully: simply neck-up the 6.5x47 LAPUA, and proceed from there: it's almost as easy as the 30BR.
BTW, the Lapua offering was so close to my original 30x47HBR reamer that there is only 0.001" head-space difference between the Forgreen's 30x47 and my Henriksen set (6mm;257;6.5;30) based upon the LAPUA body - LAPUA pretty much cloned and necked-down our 30x47 HBR. The BIG difference being the case-head diameters: roughly 0.463+" vs 0.469+".Oh, and then, before I forget again: a properly dimensioned .300 Savage isn't too shabby!
