How big is "big bore" ?

Most folks (including me) are scared of big rifle recoil. Many of these folks have no fear of 3.5" 12 gauge waterfowl or turkey loads. If we did not shoot these big rifles from the bench we would not be so wary. The double standard is amusing but real. A 3.5" lead turkey load has more recoil energy than all but the craziest big rifles.
That's my first question to my customers, have you shot a 3.5" 2oz turkey load?

I choot a 50 DTC. It's a big push at 2550fps with 750s

Most big bores rifles are very manageable to shoot. Big mistake most people make is trying to shoot off a bench. Big Mistake.

I saw a picture somewhere of one of the big English gun makers shooting double guns to and they used a rest that was shoulder high so you were standing and shooting with the gun rested.

Standing is much more forgiving than sitting crouched forward at a bench. You don't even notice most recoil hunting. I will say that most recoil will not hurt you. Muzzle brakes have the potential to ruin your hearing or the guy next to you.

 Ask Dan Dowling how manageable they are. Via a trade, Dan ended up with my 500 Nitro Express loaded with a 570 grain bullet. He shot it one time, then put it away:D

Some people are more recoil sensitive than others. I owned my 1st 460 WBY when I was 18 years old. I have owned an A-Square Hannibal rifle in .577 Tyrannosaur that shoots a 750 grain bullet at 2460fps at 10,180 foot pounds of energy and as long as you leaned into it, it wasn't as bad as some people told me it was going to be. Every time that I went to the range with it I never put more than 5 rounds thru it. I was lucky that I have never been recoil sensitive. I've seen some people tell me how bad shooting a 30BR is and I just look at them with a "are u for real look on my face".

I would think the grey area that begins Big bore to be around the size where the definition of 'caliber' changes to define the length of barrel in ratio to bore diameter.

Edit, or the projectile diameter that causes problems with backstops or rule regulations.

Or Maine! Or Ohio!

Don't forget, your hero lives in Maryland.
Please Eddie. Biggest mistake I made was moving to Maine. Should of headed to TN like I wanted to. There wouldn't still be over 2 feet of snow still on the ground. Well my hero is out of the shooting business. He just came back from Costa Rica. Boy did he catch a mess of yellow fin tuna and sail fish. Sure beats going to the range and setting flags, and all that happy horse shit that goes with it. Spend all that money and if you win you get a $2.00 piece of wood that isn't worth burning in the wood stove.

Bet that is quite a "big push". That is an artillery round.
Not really. I hit some 1/2" mild steel at 200 yards. Didn't even go through. The shot on top of another shot was the only one that made a partial hole that the second round stuck in.
