How are you using your Wilson cartridge gauge?

My Wilson 6mmBR cartridge gauge tells me:
1) My new 6mmBR Lapua brass is .004" too long.
2) My 6mmBR RP brass is at max.
3) The brass fired from my R700 is .004" too long [I used the Lapua brass as headspace gauge].
4) My Sav99 make brass that is .013" too long [How did I do that? Jet lag?].

I know most people use the gauge to adjust the dies, but I am thinking about taking the rifles apart and reducing the headspace so they make brass that is .001" too long.

A coworker/friend of mine had a 99 that also had a lot of head space. So much so that factory ammo would move so far forward that the primer strike wouldn't be enough for ignition. I told him to take it to a gunsmith. I doubt he ever did.

I simply use case gauges to check size die adjustment on auto loaders. I use my dial calipers to check for case length.
