I am relocating to Sugarland and am looking for a range to benchrest shoot. Any recommendations?
Scott,
Welcome to Texas. As a former New Yorker (40 years ago) I think you will like it here, if you can stop thinking of the East Coast as the center of the universe. Also keep in the forefront of your mind that Fort Bend County is RED and this is a RED state. Being from New Jersey your co-workers may occasionally refer to you as a foreigner which is slightly better than being an illegal.
Since you like to shoot you couldn't have picked a better place. You can go to the American Shooting Center
http://www.amshootcenters.com/ on the west part of town. I believe the longest range they have is a 300 yard range. I don't know much about them since I've never been there. Many of our members used to go there before they became members.
Greenwood Gun Club is near
http://greenwoodgunclub.org/ near Lake Jackson is south of Bayou Rifle and they don't have Benchrest either. So if you're dead set on Benchrest you can do it at Bayou but we just don't have matches for it.
I live right next door to Sugar Land and I am a member of Bayou Rifle. We have an excellent club with ranges from 5' pistol ranges to a 1,000 yard rifle range. Membership is $149 a year. We do not have Benchrest competitions, but we do have Highpower competitions. We shoot from the prone position, and if your health permits it, you can switch to Belly Benchrest (F-Class). We have two matches a month. On the 1st Sunday is the 1K yard match and on the 3rd Sunday is the mid-range match which alternates between 300 and 600 yard. Both are very popular and we have regular visitors that come in from San Antonio and Dallas to shoot with us. In the winter time guys come down from Kansas, Dakotas, Michigan, etc.. to play with us. It's a great bunch of guys and I enjoy the camaraderie as much as the shooting. I have made many friends there.
Further down the road you can go to PSC Shooting Club
http://www.psc-range.com/ , I used to be a member there before I found out about Bayou Rifle. Like Bayou you can shoot benchrest there but there are no Benchrest competitions as far as I know.
There is Bailey's House of Guns, that is a private shooting range that you pay $11 per gun and just shoot.
I know there are more places on the north part of Houston but I don't frequent them because I have all that I want where I am now.
If I can be of further help feel free to drop me a PM.
Kindest regards.
Joe
P.S. Get rid of the NJ plates ASAP. The SL police will take notice, not a good thing.
