hot bath bluing

yes, many people are out there doing hot bath bluing, but due to EPA rules and the price of salts, a lot of the small one man general gunsmiths shops have gone away.

I believe that the demand for bluing has decreased significantly in the past 20 years or so. A lot of new (or "custom") guns are finished with anything other than bluing - Cerakote, DLC, nitride, etc. I think that lack of demand combined with the EPA requirements have caused a lot of especially small(er) shops to drop bluing from their offered finishes.

Did it some 22 years ago. Gave it up (too labor intensive and too costly) but still have all the equipment and two unopened 5 gallon pails of Brownells bluing salts.

Will fire it up later this year as I have 3 rifles in work (personal guns) that I intend to hot blue.

Umm trouble brewing at 285 degrees F. (the black iron tank). Nasty stuff, will burn your skin off.

One of the local shops in plummer Idaho does bluing for incredible prices and does a good job. His turn time is usually a week.

Mel Doyle's gun shop.

i have all the stuff and do a good job . but as said earlier i have cut it off also ,it's just to time consuming . my shop must be shut down for at least two days while bluing and clean up is complete . no one in until it's all cleaned up . now i have a guy i send it to .

Back in the 80's and 90"s I blued 100's of guns. I would normally blue about 15 guns at a time. And would blue a couple times a month. One day to take apart and polish, one day to blue and one to reassemble. Unless I was redoing the wood. I liked doing it and was good money.

I’m going to buy a setup from Brownells later this year and do my own bluing, I like doing it... and of course you are right, now as many do it anymore.

got a friend who uses brownell blue salts says he can't get them . i haven't checked to see if that's the case .yeah just checked out of stock back order, he's been waiting 2 months .

Sadly, Mel passed away last week. We are diminished. Try Keith at K&F in St. Maries Idaho. He bought Mel's parkerizing equipment a year or so back (Mel refered/sent phosphating to him), and does bluing as well.

Hard to find places, especially in NY. I once used Brownell's Express blue and did a barrel myself by following their directions. Still a little bit of a project, but it came out quite nicely.

yeah i do it . i work with a friend been in business for 50 years old world stuff . have my own tanks but we use his . i do barreling for his rifles he does the bluing when i have it . but he's 80 something so mine are sitting there when i feel it time to fire them up there ready to go . www.therifler.com

Because I like old single shot rifles, I’ve done some old school slow rust bluing as it’s period correct for them. It only takes one tank, one burner, and a dozen gallons of distilled water. Sure, it’s time consuming, but it looks amazing.

Do you plug the barrel bore when rust bluing?
