hornedy 117gr sst in 25-06

When it first came out my hunting buddy tried it in his 25-06 with Remington case, CCI-BR2 primer, 52 grs H-4831. It was a real tack driver but when he started shooting deer with it in Eastern NC that average 125 to 175 pounds live weight with shoulder shots the deer wanted to run off a little after being hit. When you use the same shot placement with a Sierra 117 SP 99.9% of the time they drop right in their tracks. I had the same experience with the Hornady 117 interlock bullets as my buddy did with the SST's before I started using the Sierras. We both stick with the Sierra 117's now. I shot 6 deer, 2 buck and 4 doe, with the Sierra's in my 25-06 this past season from 75 yards to 300 yards. Four were shoulder shots that dropped them right in their tracks and two were behind the shoulder lung shots and both deer dropped with in 20 yards and a blind man could have followed the blood trails.

I also use the 117 sierra. I use the gameking and prohunter. they both shoot the same. i prefer the gameking, but if i find a good deal on the prohunters, i pick them up. I shot a 6x6 elk with the prohunter this year. didn't have any problems. found the bullet on the opposite side of ribcage against the hide. perfect mushroom, and it was devestating wound channel. one of the guys asked me what kind of magnum i was shooting while we were working it up, so i obliged in telling him. 257 roberts. i am getting 2750 fps with them.

I have used the HORNADY 117 SST's for several years in my Browning A-bolt 25-06 with 22" barrel. I use a very stiff load of RL-22 that I will not post here, but I can tell you that I have shot a 3/8" 3 shot group with them out of that light rifle without real cooling in between shots. I assume you want these for hunting and I have shot several Texas hill country and West Texas whitetails with them and they are devestating, no deer has even taken a step when hit with these. They hold together much better then ballistic tips, which I hate) and give good penetration. I have not had any detonation with these when hitting bone, they ruin a coyotes day as well! I plan on shooting some accubonds this coming year for comparision but I have been very pleased with this bullet. I also used this bullet on one New Mexico Muley with the same results.

Longest shot on whitetails has been about 325 yds. I don't have my data in front of me to remember what primer I am using but play with primers to see how they are with groups. I also seat the bullet as far out as the magazine will permit and I'm still off the lands in MY rifle so be fore warned to make sure that the bullet is not into the lands in your rifle if you are going to shoot max loads. I have yet to shoot a deer more than once with this bullet, but I always pick my shoots although I have taken at least one deer with a quartering away shoot with the same results. A nice bullet and if it shoots in your rifle you should be happy with the results. Dave

How far off the lands is your COL?
