Hornadys new Measurement Station

I hope they are better then their head space gauges, or anvil bases. Have several, and none measure the same. I keep one on my bench, and another in my box that i take to the range. With several i have, the closest one i could find is .018 difference. They need to work on the tolerences of their measuring tools. DJB

That's because they are comparators and not direct reading tools. Not to be rude but honestly, it's obvious that all of these complaints are being made by people that clearly have no idea of how the tools are used or any real concept of the kind of accuracy that they were designed to measure with. These are tools for the average hand loader, they are not lab quality precision instruments used by a quality control expert. Measurements that are plus or minus .001" is usually just fine for the average user so as far as I can see this tool will fit that requirement very well and it will fit the budget of most hand loaders very well.

Like others have said, I've picked up or made tools that will do the same things as this will so I have no need to buy it but if I were just starting out it would be a convenient way to have several tools in one device that would reduce the clutter on my bench.

Rammac........I am not just an average shooter. I have been shooting different types of compatitions for over 40 years. Yes I made the mistake of believing that these would be adequate for bench rest shooting, and small groups. Yes.... after all these years I am still learning. I don't believe there is anyone out there that shoots some type of compatition that bought something just to find out it was not money well spent.
I shot short range NBRSA for 9 years, and shoot 600 and 1000 yard IBS, and do not quibble over cost when it comes to getting winning accuracy. I do not have the equipment to be able to make my own shooting needs.
Maybe this would be a good time to find out who makes readily available tight tolerence OAL, and head spacing gauges? DJB

The comment about 3/4" dia solid rod not being stiff enough? Ever try to bend a 36" length of 3/4 drill rod? Ever even have a stick of drill rod in hand?

The comment about size of indicator shaft used for chambering is spot on for comparison.

I guarantee that is stiff enough. The biggest source of error when sorting cases and bullets is how tightly they fit into the comparator sleeve, or in some cases, how straight they can held. It’s easy to push/tip a bullet in a thou or three. This seems overdone to me compared to some other options, but if it’s cheaper, I’m sure it will sell well.

The biggest issue with these tools is the stability of the indicators mount. You are constantly lifting the spindle and then lowering it down. Any flex will throw off the reading. Secondly is lowering the spindle carefully and a consistently each and every time.

I agree. There is room to make errors. I use the Hornady anvil base which helps. Still I have to wiggle the tail around to be sure I have it inline and flat looking for the lowest reading without using an excessive force on the caliper. If readings aren't repeatable, then you have a problem.

I found this handle online and it was something like $1. It makes this much easier to use.

I like it. But i have already spent more then $253.00 to measure what this one unit dose and Im not going backwards. The rabbit hole is getting deeper. Uuuggghhh.

I do 98 percent of my loading at the range, using various individuals tools to perform the functions this does.
It does look nice.

I think a simple cast iron surface plate of compact size could be fitted with a magnetic base for indicating and get you close with better grade instruments.

Particularly the latter. This is why I don’t sort bullets. I can’t get consistent enough with my calibers to net repeatable results
