Hornady Vmax vs Sierra BK's

Now that I have my 20 Practical build finalized and underway, I need to gather info on bullet choices. I decided on a 11 twist, thinking it would be the best of both worlds. This meaning this should allow me to shoot 32 to 40 grain pills. This will be a designated rat patch killer, nothing else. I keep hearing so much about the Sierra 39 grain BlitzKing that I decided to post. I'm a Hornady guy and have always had good explosive accuracy with them. But that doesn't mean I won't try something else.

Basically, what I'm asking is what makes the BK so much better than a 40 grain Vmax or BT?

Like you Mike my VTs are 12 twist and I stick with the 32s. I built a 20 Duster(20-222AI) with an 11 twist so both 32s and 40s could be used but to be honest I have mostly used the 40 Vmax in it. My best shot with it was 572 yards on a pd. I've used the 39s in my 20br and gotten quite a few pds past 500 yards with it as well.
I like both the Sierra and Hornady 39 and 40 in my rifles, you really owe it to yourself to try both and see which your rifle prefers. Now if Sierra ever offers us the 36 as another component choice those VTs may get a new favorite.

I would look at availability. The sierras are not always around. I like a bullet that works and i can find. For the last 4 years 20 cal bullets have been slim picking in my parts and occasional serch on web except hornadys 32 or 40gr. I really like bergers and use them in my 204 so i saved them for that rifle. When i built my 20p i wanted noslers but were nowhere to be found. Hornadys were on the shelf so i stockpiled the 40 vmax. I have no regrets. I have gotten some 40gr bergers and will run some testing to see how they do. Also if you are going to do much shooting, Hornady is cheeper for volume shooting. Sierras leave the Reloader people high and dry at times.

I shoot Sierra over Hornady anytime that I can. They just plain shoot better for me in every rifle that I own. With that said, I do have a bunch of V Max that I bought during tough times when Sierras weren’t available.
Copy that. So, question, why are they so proud of their bullets? They seem to be quite a bit higher than the going rate, such as Nosler and Hornady. Just saying...

Same here. Sierras have a match grade jacket and a thinner one as well. Ive had great luck w both. Sierra are more explosive imo. The 39gr sierra is the best of them all i think. Early in the 204 years the 39gr sierra shot better in a 12tw than the 40gr hornady. Obviously not an issue w an 11. Red boxes have been easier to find. They all work good. Green box for me. Just an opinion

I couldn't get 40gr VMax to shoot well in my original 204, the 39gr BK worked exceptionally well and were highly effective - DRT. I have a couple hundred left from my last buy, and a new 204 barrel, and plans for a 20 sploder in the works. Time to restock - I cringe at 35 cents each, though...

50 gr V-Maxes, just HAMMER out, small group's, in my 1-14 twist, .22-250 Rem at, 3,550 FPS and,..
SPLODE, the Sage Rats !
I can SEE them, "Splode", in My 20x Scope at, this,.. Speed !
Yup,.. NO, Muzzle "Jump" !

I’m also a vmax fan due to shooting great and economy. In 204 12 twist barrels, the 39BK almost always shoots better than the 40vmax. In my 11t criterion, they are nearly the same in accuracy, but only a very slight advantage with the 39BK including higher bc.
